OK -- let me clarify, her future success as a singer is not a given.. However, you are correct. Should she get herself a good financial advisor (or if she can do it herself), she could make that $5 mill turn into quite a comfortable future.

I don't know how they structure the 5M recording contract, probably not all paid in one year, but for simplicity sake, say she gets all 5M in one year. Let's just say the combined tax bite is 33%, which leaves her with only 3.3M after taxes and then other managers get a swipe too, say 3M net.
If she only got a 4% return per year on 3M it would = $120,000/year without touching principal. The reality is usually quite different from that...as most of the principal gets mauled with fingerprints.

RE: X Factor – The Final
The reason the Simon created the USA version of X Factor is revealed in the YT viewing statistics. First, the number of views far exceeds those for AI. Chris Rene's audition is a about to reach 12 million, Stacy Francis has a video approaching 4 million, and Marcus has over 3 million on his audition. Big numbers for all of them.
So, why so many? Answer: worldwide audience. The viewing maps reveal high numbers of viewers in the English speaking world, and in many other countries. This makes sense given that X-Factor has been running for years in various countries.
Although AI video statistics are often not available, from the one's with statistics that I've seen, the audience is largely North American. So, perhaps the country kids reflect a decision to focus AI more specifically on music for the USA market, while X-Factor goes for the worldwide audience. If so, expect more country.

I believe the view counts for X-Factor on YouTube are so high because people can watch and "follow" the show on the YouTube channel. American Idol apparently doesn't do this because they broadcast the show in other countries at a later date.
For example, a Japanese girl tweeted Haley the other day. I checked and found the show begins airing in October there. There have also been a lot of tweets to Haley lately from Singapore, plus some in Portuguese (likely Brazil). There were quite a few that said they watched her on STAR World.
I thought STAR World must be some underground Internet site but when I finally got around to looking it up I found "STAR World is an Asian English language cable and satellite television network owned by STAR TV and Fox International...that syndicates several popular shows from the United States, United Kingdom and sometimes from Australia to appeal to the English-speaking population of India, the Middle East, the Philippines, Taiwan and Southeast Asia."

I posted too quick on that one, your points are good.
I bumped into this old story (satire):
Quote:Clinton Confused for American Idol Judge Overseas
CHILE - During her tour of Chile this week, Sec. of State Clinton was often confused for American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres.
Clinton (right) was mistaken for Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres (left) this week in Chile.Chilean crowds would often spontaneously form and mob the Secretary as she toured parts of Chile's earthquake ravaged regions this week, asking for autographs, fighting for photographs, and trying to rip parts of the Secretary's pantsuit as keepsakes. At first, Secretary Clinton believed this was just an unusually warm reception for those in dire need of U.S. disaster assistance. Later it was discovered that the crowds were, in fact, screaming "Ellen!" and mistaking the Secretary for American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres.
Speaking of Idol being seen in other countries, many of the comments on RITD are from outside the U.S. On the just the first page at YT there are comments from Turkmenistan, Singapore, Serbia, Romania, Italy, and the Philippines. It looks like it accounts for some of those high view rates on RITD.

RE: X Factor – The Final
Even James Durbin sees the problem with the X-Factor:
Quote:But what did the rocker honestly think of this Idol competitor? "Um, I think it was... interesting. I didn't like that it went so big at the very beginning. With Idol, the finale was the huge grand spectacle. It seemed like every single week, X Factor was trying to put on this huge grand spectacle," the singer admits. "They had these unneeded, unnecessary, hoochie, skanky backup dancers every single week. It was just campy and ridiculous. It didn't focus on the artist, it didn't focus on the singer."
