Quote:A performance on Conan on October 26 along with his emphasis on live performances has landed nods from the Washington Post, New York Times, Grantland, and others - all without any support of a label, publisher, or publicist.
Maybe Haley's Conan appearance was a Red Light thing.

Quote:From backwoods barbecues and community gatherings; Allen Stone emerges to share personal melodies, telling his tales of life after just 24 years. Getting his start singing at his father's church in small-town America; it wasn't until later when introduced to the greats of soul music (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin) and then to the confessional lyrical fashion of the 60's -70's singer/ songwriters, did music begin to ignite intense passion, eventually carrying this boy to a musical home.

He has self-released two records, "Last To Speak" (2010) and the self-title sophomore release "Allen Stone" (2011).

"Allen Stone" peaked at the number 2 spot on the R&B/Soul charts on iTunes and hit #9 and #35 on the Billboard Heatseekers and R&B/Hip Hop Album charts, respectively. USA Today called Allen Stone a "pitch-perfect powerhouse".

On October 26, 2011, he performed his song "Unaware" on Conan.

WWWWWOWWW!

That's pretty grooving stuff Miguel... thanks for sharing it! ... so many good things come to my attention via this odd obsession i've got for this 22 year old female singer/musician I became aware of from a kinda cheesy pop talent show

That part answered a question I didn't know how to ask tactfully... I was wondering if white musicians without an urban edge persona had a stiff barier to getting recognized in R&B and hip hop markets... I guess not if you're good enough !

He's receiving recognition and selling out shows at small venues. This gig is at a club in Montreal.

LA Times "Pop & Hiss" interview with him in December:

Quote:“I got a hold of Stevie Wonder when I was about 15. I wasn’t allowed any secular music in my house growing up and so I had to sneak records. Somebody gave me some Stevie and the first song I heard was ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ ” he recalled. “That initial hook, once he starts into that [begins singing the lyrics] you’re hooked on the rest of the song. I just mimicking what Stevie was doing vocally as best as I could.”

...“We’re getting hounded by majors," he says. "But these days you’ve gotta have your … together before you go to a label. I want to develop that cult following where I can just go to a label and say, ‘All you’ve gotta do is take it to radio,’ ” Stone laughs. “I’m really trying to do it independently as best as possible. When you’re signed to a label, they have all of their chickens in a row already, they know how they want to do it.”

“Allen Stone” has won over critics for its retro-soul vibe. His lyrics recall the days of Wonder and Marvin Gaye, artists who sang more about what was going on in the world, and a little less about what’s happening in their bedroom.

“There is so much music at the forefront that really drops the ball. R&B especially. It’s always about sex. R&B and soul music has the power to change minds and affect people emotionally and spiritually. It has the power to ignite change. And that’s where I get passionate,” Stone said. “I miss music that stimulated like ‘What’s Going On’ … songs about social change, what are we doing, what’s our government doing, what are we doing as a country? I like music that says stuff besides I want to [expletive] you.”

OK -- so for you newcomers, first I love classical, second jazz. But because of, probably, the combination of both, but mostly jazz, I have developed a deep appreciation of world music, and I really "dig" reggae.

So I can't say that I found Allen's rendition (of Bob Marley and the Wailer's) "Is This Love" remotely good or pleasant. But the second clip ("Unaware"?) was quite nice. Given what we currently know, this might work for Haley.????

RE: Montreal in November w.Allen Stone -" Soul musician" - Miguel - 08-10-2012

I think this is a one-off for Haley. He's touring with other people in the United States. Then after this gig he's heading to Europe. They likely plugged Haley in there to fill the gap. Probably around the time Casey tweeted about the guy, given Keith only vaguely recalls hearing about it. From the POV of Haley's marketing, exposing her to Indy music lovers could help her overcome the stigma of the American Idol label.

eef yeh 'com fo regue mon yeh be leevin' wit you sanwich empty mon

(ok I tried)

I thought it was kinda cool how he took the song in on

His vocals are a mix Sting and Stevie Wonder with a kind of The Police sound from the band...especially guitar.

I'm not sure I'm jumping up and down for that particular track but his voice and distinct (to me ) style really caught my attention.

I had a couple tapes of like a hundred different bands covering "louie louie".. it was off the radio. a "louie louie " marathon

Pretty cool hearing 100 different takes on Louie Louie... some were better than others of course but as long as they were different and true to the musician singing them they could be pretty cool.

... but no, i'm not ready to rush out and buy an Allen Stone album yet or anything.. but I think its really cool that sound he and his band has.... "i want to hear more from him" would have been a better way to express enthusiasm I guess.

RE: Montreal in November w.Allen Stone -" Soul musician" - buzzenator - 08-11-2012

I couldn't help but think about the paradox of paths taken by Allen vs Haley.

Allen raised in a home that didn't allow secular music. Haley in a home that pursued all things musical on a full time basis, playing all secular music. Allen wanting to play R&B because it was not allowed and develops a passion for performing it. Haley is freely given the chance to sing and perform Rock, R&B, Jazz, Funk, etc. and develops a passion for performing it. Allen going the independent, go your own way route. Haley going the route of letting the ultimate profit making TV "15 minutes of fame" slave traders showcase her abilities. Yet, both can perform on the same stage based on their love of music, similar styles of music and superb individual talents.

I like it...I think it is a great way to get Haley in front of different audiences...audiences that will appreciate her unique and powerful voice!

I recall checking out the link that Casey tweeted and greeting the video with a "whatever" and a shrug of my shoulders. It didn't grab me off the bat.

Quote:Yet, both can perform on the same stage based on their love of music, similar styles of music and superb individual talents.

They both believe music can be inspirational. But Haley is more focused on improving someone's individual outlook ("Let Yourself Be Beautiful") while he wants to create social change.

Quote:(R&B and soul music)...has the power to ignite change. And that’s where I get passionate,” Stone said. “I miss music that stimulated like ‘What’s Going On’ … songs about social change, what are we doing, what’s our government doing, what are we doing as a country? I like music that says stuff besides I want to [expletive] you.”

I suppose he's trying to do that with "Unaware," but the lyrics are lightweight and repetitive: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/a/allen+stone/unaware_20985528.html

The way he's wedged together easy-listening music with social commentary strikes me as gimmicky. And not all that effective. The tone might work better if the lyrics were more mournful - if the song fleshed out the life of his father and bemoaned how he had been betrayed by his beliefs or how is beliefs had been betrayed by the nation. In its current state, the song introduces a story element but doesn't tell a story. It needs to connect the dots.
