I mean what's the difference between paying homage and being influenced by past artists you admire, and out and out plagiarism?

I feel bad for musical artists of today, for that reason. Just like there's very rarely, a 'new story to be told', to navigate song writing w/o having to be sued for plagiarism is a significant and sometimes unfair obstacle.
