Bria. Freaking. Kelly.

RE: American Idol 2014 - NUG - 02-25-2014

Mercfan, I totally agree with Harry being out of line in his comments to Emily - I was so irritated with that!! All it does is bring out the moral police, stating "Oh thank goodness someone is bringing morality back to Idol" REALLY!?!?! Angry

RE: American Idol 2014 - NUG - 02-27-2014

My favorites last night:

Majesty Rose - I am enamored with her smile, attitude, voice. She's in my #1 spot right now.

Jena - Again, love her rich voice, I'm hoping she gets the training to be just a tiny bit less affected. She reminds me of Amy Winehouse a little.

Alex - He's so quirky, but I like it.

Emily - I'm liking her quite a bit - I'll be interested to see how she develops.

RE: American Idol 2014 - buzzenator - 02-27-2014

^ Totally agree NUG...maybe why we see eye to eye on Haley?

I did like Jessica's performance too...a la Stevie Nicks' dark and sultry vibe...anyone else we know that can do that? Heart

...and something the show could do without:Dodgy

RE: American Idol 2014 - lauraliz - 02-27-2014

My fave is def Majesty Rose. Been quite captivated by her since her initial audition. I think she has an ethereal quality about her and I love her voice. She is adorable too.

I think Alex is interesting. Waiting to see more of him

Jessica has a good voice. I think her "tv personality" may not come across that well. Actually, I think Alex may have the same problem.

I like Jena. She has a lot of spunk and and a distinctive voice.

Sam has a pretty voice. He has a lot of potential. But, at this point he's a little bland. But, I'm sure he is raking in the votes.

One of the country guys is kind of interesting. He sang the Folsom Prison Blues last nite. He did sing it at a rapid pace which was pointed out by one of the judges. I'm sure that is because they only get a little over a min or so to do the song haha.

I am enjoying the season ok so far. But, not like season 10. However, better than 11 and 12. What I don't understand is why TPTB put most of the weakest performances at the top of the show. I bet quite a few casual viewers flipped the station before the 1st half hour or so was over. They should have put at least one strong performance in that early mix. Ratings are falling--so I'm not sure if that's a good idea. (Unless most of the viewers are known to tune in at the 9pm hr. I'm not sure)

I love Buzzenator doggie Heart

RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 02-27-2014

Yea, the 9pm slot is actually better. (If you think about it, people in the middle of the country would start idol at 7pm..so when it's 9 on the east coast, its 8 in middle america..helps the ratings all around.)

The show started off rough, but I liked everyone from MK afterwords.

MK and Sam just have really pretty pure voices. I don't think last night is the best we'll see from them, but it wouldn't shock me if those two stay "good" for their entire tenure on idol. (And, I expect Sam to win..)

I'm warming up to Majesty a lot. But I thought that performance was a little more flawed than some made like.

Jessica and Emily were great. Emily's vocals are so effortless and she seemed comfortable on the stage. Jess looked less comfortable but her Voice was fantastic. And that song..what an awesome pick.

I really liked Alex last night. Looks like the WGWG upped their game.

Caleb grossed me out with the toothpaste, I couldn't enjoy his performance after that.

I so want to like Jena. Like...I really love her voice, but I haven't liked it on a cover song she's chosen yet. I thought she butchered "The Scientist." But I love her voice so much I didn't really care..(And The Scientist is sort of a special song to me, so for me to say "I don't care.." means I'm giving Jena a LOT of leeway.)

RE: American Idol 2014 - kaypea - 02-27-2014

Agreed on Jessica and Emile. Also agree on Majesty-the performance was decent but then again-the season 10 tour performance with Haley and company of Tightrope forever spoiled me for that song.

Have no use for any of the guys though.

RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 02-27-2014

I'm really curious what Jessica would look like if she didn't cake on so much make up....Tongue
I wasn't sure that she looked completely comfortable without her guitar, but appreciated that she would give it a go without her 'crutch'. There was something...off? about the tone of her voice that made it hard for me to like it completely... last night was the best her voice sounded so far IMO.. So maybe freeing up from the guitar helped ?

Holy balls, I'm just watching your performance of last night. You fucking rock star. Your voice could move fucking mountains man!!!

RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 02-27-2014

I think she's really really pretty. Here's a video of her with blonde hair, which I think suits her better. (Still caked on eye shadow. But I think that's just the look she has.)

Kind of not happy with the B3 results tonight. I mean..I expect the female onslaught..and one of them certainly was the worst. (Not the one that left though) But still..there were a host of poor performances from the guys..

RE: American Idol 2014 - My Alter Ego - 02-27-2014

^^On the message board of Mr. Slezak's TV-Line recaps, I've been a little surprised to see how many people find the group competing this year as "boring." There's quite a bit of real talent in a handful of people, even if I don't actually like what a few of them do. It would seem that more of the AI audience really does prefer "being entertained" rather than actually appreciating good musicianship, which doesn't surprise, but completely dismays me. Angry

Mercfan, I agree with you about the pure, pretty voices of both Sam and MK, but for me it goes beyond just "pure, pretty voices" to a deep appreciation of the simplicity of their performances: they do this because they love music, and they want the music to shine through their performances, not their personalities, but the music that they love. To me, it's clear in the song choices they make and the way that they perform. I find them both so refreshing and I adore them both! That said MK needs to ditch the stupid baseball cap turned backwards, and both need to overcome nerves/shyness/whatever (or learn how to not let that show) and learn to connect more with the audience. And, believe me, I truly do know how hard it is to connect if one is shy.

I adore Majesty Rose as well! Another individual whose performances I have found completely refreshing. And, Mercfan, I suspect that you are correct and in May, Sam will be crowned the new American Idol. But I really want Majesty to give him a run for his money -- and I think she's capable of doing so.

I can appreciate Alex's instrumental musicianship. In that respect, he may be like Casey Abrams. However, I don't want to hear the guy (Alex) sing. I find neither his voice nor his stylistic preferences remotely pleasant. But again, I do recognize that he knows what he's doing when an instrument is in his hands.

Jessica Meuse puts me in an unusual place. I don't like her preferred musical genre at all and there's little, if anything about her voice, specifically her vibrato, that I like. But I'm touched by her NoWhereVille background and her attitude that whether she's a "broke or making it" musician, she's going to be a musician. And thus, I hope she stays long enough to develop a following that can and will support her so that she can pursue that music career.

I think both Emily and Malaya would have benefited by waiting a year or two (or more for Malaya). Neither one seems to know how to really connect/sell the songs they've chosen to sing. Neither seem to be selecting songs that are necessarily what they should be doing. This week, Malaya mentioned that she "plays a lot of instruments." That is impressive only if one excels on at least one of them and/or has such a deep musical understanding that one knows how that translates to other instruments (remember the old saying "jack of all trades, master of none"?). I grew up knowing such a person. Casey Abrams is another example, and, I suspect, that Alex Preston may be another. I'm doubtful that Malaya is there yet -- if she ever will be. While Malaya's energy is a kick, musically she's not where she needs to be to be on AI at this point. But she's just so cute.

I'm completely on the fence about Jena. I did like her performance of the song that she'd written. (But, of course, without any other reference point, if you like the song, then you'll like the performance/performer.) But i'm not impressed with her other performances enough to want her to go far. And I'm in complete agreement with many on Mr. Slezak's message board that her current vocal technique could do damage to her vocal chords. She really needs to "say something" musically soon or I will "give up on her."

That leaves the "country boys" and Caleb. With the exception of how uncomfortable I find it that CJ "teaches" guitar (I've read that somewhere), which just hurts, I have no comment -- well, with the qualifier that I hope all of them will be quickly dismissed (through votes). But they're country, so how likely is that?
