My view has always been that Interscope got the final 3 they wanted. I can't see how they viewed James as widely marketable-- in the sense that Scotty, Lauren and Haley would be (and have turned into since). I believe Jimmy wanted Haley above James, with the final order not being all that important. [As has been pointed out, Scotty was a shoe-in for the win from mid-season onward] Jimmy gave Haley some amazing song choices toward the end (Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Animals, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac) which served to showcase her incredible talent and potential star power. Meanwhile, Randy and J-Lo started the 'let's bash Haley at every opportunity' campaign-- which, in reality, served to stirred some parts of the viewership in to a voting frenzy for Haley. I know I was enraged. That pushed Haley over James by week four. I have no idea what Randy and J-Lo really thought of (and now think of) Haley, but it's clear to me that Steven and Jimmy really liked and supported Haley. Jimmy signed Haley pretty quickly after the show, and it was only after he left Interscope that she was dropped from the label. In general, Idol has been really good to Haley, and she has been loyal to them-- which I'm sure they appreciate. That helped pave the way for her to be asked to be a mentor, sing CHFIL in front of millions of viewers, and the consequent bump in Haley interest across the board.

Well, that's what I think the battle was. Jimmy wanted Haley, Lauren and Scotty. Nigel wanted James, Lauren and was stuck with Scotty.

But I think Jimmy wanted Haley more than any other contestant, and Nigel wanted Lauren more than any other contestant.

I'm not quite following. Jimmy was chairman and CEO until May 2014. Haley was dropped in December 2012.

IIRC Haley was dropped as part of a large talent 'dump' because of some kind of change in Interscope's organization.... it wasn't 'necessarily' related to Jimmy/AI or anything. They needed to trim their roster, Haley was too new an artist to keep in Interscope's eyes

Haley probably did not want to get dropped, but she did. I don't totally understand the music business but Haley has played it smart. She signed with Ole in 2012 before being dropped and eventually signed an expanded deal with Ole who has been very good to her. She is more of a budding artist with limited funds. Ole has the talent in their roster who I think believes in her talent and are willing to invest time and money. She has done very well with PMJ and marketing music on the internet, while they are covers covers she has gotten a lot of recognition. She does eventually need a label but the right one for her.
