s10x - Babbs234 - 03-18-2013 IMO, Haley has a lot more, I don't know how to say it musically, texture, and variety in her voice, along with that power, which makes her very appealing to listen to, for me. Technically, Siobhan is a very good singer (if a bit nasally at times). She has a pure tone and a very good vibrato. I agree with you that Haley is just more interesting as a singer. Haley has a unique tone and a special way with phrasing like no one else. I can listen to Haley endlessly. Siobhan not so much, although watching the video Tusk put up did bring up some nice memories. RE: S10 - Miguel - 03-19-2013 The latest on Siobhan: http://haleyfans.com/showthread.php?tid=1659&pid=24372#pid24372 RE: S10 - Swansteel - 03-19-2013 LOL. I had the feeling we were getting a little off topic. I'm glad that Miguel decided to split off the topic rather than erase it completely. Thank you for keeping things on track. ![]() RE: S10 - My Alter Ego - 03-19-2013 Since Season 10, I continue to read Michael Slezak's TVLine recaps about the current season of American Idol and follow the comments. I find it interesting that so many of the comments that I'm seeing this year keep mentioning the deep talent pool of last year (as "so good," "the best," etc.) as compared to this year. And while, to some degree, I will agree with that, there seems to be a memory lapse about the, at least equally deep if not deeper, talent pool of the year before. While there are shout outs about Haley or someone else (mainly Haley) interspersed (and, of course, there are the frequent Michael and/or Melinda "Haley" references), I'm, I guess, bemused by how: a.) quickly people forget; b.) how little some of these folks know; or c.) ?? how people like to comment without any knowledge whatsoever ????. Perhaps it's because there do seem to be a lot of new commenters (unless some/many of them change their online identity from year to year). And granted, some of these folks seem to confuse Season 9 and Season 10. I definitely don't get that (but I'm into detail, where, obviously, others are not). All in all , it's very curious to me, and, in some ways, makes me want to don my "researcher's hat" and pursue. This might shock you (parenthesies are to be sure it comes across as personal opinion.. ; ) .. and that I'm in the minority) But I(my should-try-to-be humble ear) find Siobans Vastly better than Haley's. (crazy huh?) I can't even listen to Haley's.. even though I can listen to every other Haley song 4 times in a row. (for me) Haley so entirely misses the points to the song and I don't even have a clue about what other point Haley is making about it. Normally I like a more positive fighting attitude spin that Haley puts on almost every song but... I've got no clue even where that is going with what words she emphasizes and ...well even on top of the words I don't find the pure notes pleasing either. I do rather like Sioban's version as a stand a alone too. I'm just saying it means something and its pleasant for my ear. I'm not making any immensely positive statement about it. I'm not inclined to compare two artists but given that I hit skip midway through haley's version if I happen to still have it in a play list.. its pretty easy for me to say that. I really really like the song too. I used to listen to the animals versions all the time. I think Sioban comes pretty close to their studio versions. I do think another artist could do it even better though...build upon the Animals. Evidently it was a song thats been around for a long time... perhaps even an old sailing song that made it from Ireland to the south with some twists along the way back and forth over time. (I think that my ear hearing the chords as a sort of sailing song and expecting that sort of fireside story telling version it could be a major chunk of my turnoff from Haley's version... but its more than that ... there are a few notes Haley sings that I do not like at all and those particular notes are so front and center that really hurts too.. and dissapointment because I certainly Expect to love anything Haley sings) RE: S10 - cherelann - 03-21-2013 ^^Very brave analysis, Tom. However, you did make me listen to both versions again. I do think that Siobhan was coming from a more personal place with her version. However, I enjoy Haley's tone more so Haley's version hits my sweet spot. Music is subjective on so many different levels but I am impressed that you had the guts to give an opinion that isn't Haley positive...different points of view help us reexamine our perspectives. ![]() ![]() ![]() ETA: And sometimes we do change our minds... Everyone is entitled to be pleased by what they hear, the way they hear it! I know I'm in the vast minority on this one as I think the House of the Rising Sun was one of the best selling singles from AI10 and definitely by a noticeble margin over all but a couple others ! So yes... to each their own! 100% no-qualifications I agree I think more than anything.. because I like Haley's singing so much, its jarring to me when there's something she sings that I don't like ! (its the only one! other than a couple recordings where I can't tell from the sound quality not giving them a fair shake) Here is where I'm coming on from the Sailing song comment. I couldn't find this type of version of the actual song but I hear enough of this in the Animals and Sioban and the sound , brought a bit more current, was probably part of my fascination with the song. Again.. .my personal fascination.. no need for others to think of it that way. My ear just heard old English folk roots in hearing the animals version.. and while I never actively thought about it, my ear probably had expectations. I googled this all a year ago trying to figure out what my problem with Haley's version was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun Quote:Origin and early versions Quote:The Animals version While the animals thought they were bringing it from New Castle, it had come from there long long before they brought it. It is quite a long article.. those are just snippets... the song was recorded by many old school American country/ fold artists. Woodie Gunthri in 1941 . I can't even name all they list in the article. It seems like every third performe did a version of it in the 40 years too including The Ventures, Sinead Occoner. BON JOVI ... and more The doors, The White Buffalo (punkish), nina Simone, Susy Chapman, the grateful dead, Pink Floyd etc.. really everyone. Here are is a reall old one back woods country style Here is a play list of 15 of them (I start towards the end with Sinead) OK now to entirely over do the subject. Here is my favorite ever on a Singing Contest show, and maybe my favorite ever (athough I think I'd prefer just Jerry Larson with more subtle backround singers. I almost didn't mention it , but since i've said everything else I think about the song: LOL RE: S10 - Swansteel - 03-21-2013 Siobhan's version is nice (but, man, I just can't take her nasal tone any longer). I much prefer the grit and fire of Haley's version. I will say that as Haley has done the song more and more I think her interpretation has definitely evolved into something truly special. When I heard her sing the song live in San Jose it was the only performance of the night that made my scalp tingle and brought tears to my eyes. Later versions she has done have hit me right in the gut--in a really good way. Tom, I do admire your willingness to express an opinion that would seem to go against the grain. I fully believe honest opinions should be freely expressed in any discussion forum. While I applaud your bravery, I have to add that my view differs. I love that you said it however. ![]() RE: S10 - Himm2 - 03-22-2013 I'll always be most impressed by this Haley performance of HOTRS: especially her command of the stage & audience, arm actions to accentuate that drum beat, and pooring her heart & soul into it. I also really enjoyed the ending of HOTRS she did with Keith at Lollapalooza where they playfully threw it back & forth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2360WcInbNk#t=265s |
