RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Tusk - 05-05-2013 How many songs did Jessica have a hand in writing on her album? I would guess, none, and that will be a defining difference in their careers. As Haley's career progresses we will see just how bright and vesatile she is. At least Jessica has "Glee" which may help jump start her career and convince Interscope to do more for her. Right, I think Haley's input in her album helped her in a lot of ways. (For starters, musically speaking..it was a better album. Granted. Jessica's is pretty good for a 17 year old.) I think what will help Jessica is her already there International audience. But part of me wonders if Interscope is ready to drop Jessica and pick up Amber..just to see if rinse and repeat happens again. WELL...this is interesting...see below...I wonder if Interscope will repeat their same promo and marketing efforts with Jessica as Haley given her first week numbers. If so, not good for Jessica... (From TheHonestyHour web site): "In related Idol news, Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez released her debut album Me, You & the Music last week and the set arrives at No. 26 on the chart with 14,000 copies sold. This figure is slightly lower than initial projections of 15,000 to 17,000 copies. Sanchez’s sales are disappointing but not surprising. While she is incredibly talented (and I wish she’d won Idol), the promotion for the the record was non-existent as I explained here. Also, the album itself was pretty generic, in my opinion. To put Sanchez’s sales into perspective, Haley Reinhart, Season 10 third-placer, debuted at No. 17 on the chart with her first studio album, Listen Up! with 20,000 copies in its first week. To see a comparison of other Idol contestants’ recent sales, visit USA Today." RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Tom22 - 05-10-2013 I imagine sales in the Phillipines, will more than equal domestic sales where she has become a pop idol (they like Haley too btw, just not at the same sort of mega-star level -- Haley's petite size probably plays a role and they went gaga during idol over those expensive idol dresses.. even the 75 year old great aunts) American Idol is almost tailor made for their culture (it's family orientated , they love the whole nature of celebreties and things like brands with a buzz) Also - (more important on a domestic level) Jessica's music is mainstream dance music . It's got a different target listener - I'm not sure if the music on the album is reflective of what she'll write or work on later. ON that note! Lauren Alaina is really growing up. I love seeing that transition in women.. one of lifes sort of special things. I remember how much better the 'girls' looked at my 10 year high school re-union when they're 27 instead of 17. I think Lauren has also really embraced her roll having the presence of a Celbrety and looking the part. I know that isn't everything but it has a "feel good" aspect to it and.. I like to feel good -might be cloying to others but a happy nature is never cloying to me as long as the smile fits the person behind it (sure they might "rally " themselves into their best mood to hit the stage -- but it is theirs. I thought her line about Ryan's question about "Buckwild" and her little naughty twinkle along with the "you'll have to ask my Dad" was hilarious. Yeah.. maybe it's your typical variety show "schtik" dating back to Ed Sullivan through Flip Wilson and Tony Orlando and Dawn but ... that sort of pleasant repartee .. like you'd have a a coctail party etc. make me feel good. Did I say it already ? Boy Lauren looked sexy! She looked more like 20 to be honest which is the cut-off age I think for me to allow myself to oogle a little bit. Jessica hasn't quite "flourished" that way yet although she's getting there... another year or two for it to feel right. This got me wondering how much Jessica & some of the other idols were involved in the writing process. So I looked up some the albums released by Season 10 & 11 Idols in Wiki to find out. Haley Reinhart - Listen Up - Writing credits for 13 of 14 songs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listen_Up!_(Haley_Reinhart_album) Colton Dixon - A Messenger - Writing credits for 13 of 14 songs (One of which is a 47sec Intro written solely by Dixon, but I don't know if that's music or something else) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Messenger Phillip Phillips - World From the Side of the Moon - Writing credits for 11 of 16 songs (4 songs were written solely by Phillips) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_from_the_Side_of_the_Moon Casey Abrams - Casey Abrams - Writing Credits for 10 of 11 songs (I had to go to a different source for this, so it's not as easy to see if he has sole credit for any of the songs) http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/idol-worship/casey-abrams-self-titled-debut-album-interview-341838 James Durbin - Memories of a Beautiful Disaster - Writing credits for 5 of 14 songs (The song "Right Behind You" was written solely by Durbin) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memories_of_a_Beautiful_Disaster Jessica Sanchez - Me, You, and the Music - Writing credits for 3 of 10 songs (4 of 11 if you count the Spanglish version of No One Compares in addition to the original, but I probably wouldn't) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me,_You_%26_the_Music Lauren Alaina - Wildflower - Writing credits for 1 of 12 songs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildflower_(Lauren_Alaina_album) Scotty McCreery - Clear As Day - Writing credits for 0 of 12 songs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_as_Day Anyway, I thought some of you guys might be interested in this. This doesn't address how good the songs are, (which is fairly subjective anyway), just how many songs they earned a credit for writing. RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Tusk - 05-10-2013 Thnx for the research....where the impact will be felt is future royalties, that's where Haley and Casey (and Colton) have a head start. The additional stream of income also allows them a bit of wiggle room, allows more options because they wont have to solely rely on album/single sales/downloads, all things being equal ![]() Good to see Jessica has at least 3 and surprised that Scotty had none, but then again, as the winner, they probably wanted to rush it as much as they could to catch the coronation momentum... But 17 year old girl stunning. I actually can't wait to see her get older, because I think her voice will grow a bit too. For the most part, she has this very fierce powerful voice. "Sweet Dreams" is one of my all time favorite studio covers. But sometimes she can sound a little squeaky/little kiddish. And I think a lot of that is because her voice isn't fully developed. On the other side, I'm also going to be interested in looking at the writing credits from DeAndre's album, whenever that drops. From the looks of things, he seems to be getting at least some of his songs from ole (I think his manager/head of the record company has some connection with them). And I'd really like to see Haley as a writer. I think it would be good for her to get some of her songs on other people's records too. I'm very interested in seeing how things work out for DeAndre. He's signed to an Indy lable. On the one hand, I'm always skeptical of those types of labels, because I don't see them as to stable. On the other hand, DeAndre's manager (who is also heading the record label) is SO enthusiastic about DeAndre. He's always promoting him on twitter. He's booked DeAndre for Summerfest. He had some pretty big names working on DeAndre's music video. (He's also well connected.) And from what he's said to some fans, they're really looking at slowly developing DeAndre for the long hall. Now there's no saying how this plays out. But as a fan..I can't help but feel enthusiastic about it. And perhaps more importantly, as an even bigger Haley fan..I can't help but wonder if a situation like the above would actually be better for her, rather than being with a major label. RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Swansteel - 05-11-2013 ^I think so. RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Outcast - 05-12-2013 (05-05-2013, 09:41 AM)mercfan3 Wrote: Interscope signed Jessica. Released a single in March..that was a poor choice for a single. Gave her little promotion besides local stuff and a performance on idol. (A performance that wasn't going to charm the older audience) and now her debut, released a year later, is expected to sell about 20K in it's first week. Interscope is not responsible for promo outside of radio. With the exception of 360 deals, (which does not include any Idol signed with a major label), all the label does is push singles to radio. They have nothing to do with booking appearances or scheduling tours, that falls on the artist's management and bookings agent respectively. Both Haley and Jessica are signed with 19 Entertainment's management arm, they are the ones who book the Idol appearances, tv/magazine interviews, red carpet appearances, guest appearances on tv shows, ect. (05-05-2013, 11:56 AM)30CamdenSquare Wrote: The biggest, most obvious, mistake Interscope made in the early promotion of Haley & now Jessica is they should've used the Idol performance AFTER the album comes out NOT to promote a single's release. Album sales bumps from Idol appearances can be high (eg: James 520% increase of MOABD units after he performed Higher than Heaven on S11), but not always. Nevertheless it's quite apparent that Idol fans tend to buy albums instead of singles. The exception being the guest stars who perform radio hits. So it makes more sense for alums to promote albums on Idol not singles. Both Scotty and Lauren debuted new singles on Idol this season but it was their old albums that saw an increase in sales. If they had new albums out then those would've gotten a sales bump. |
