Haven't listened to Mad World on iTunes yet -- waiting for the video tomorrow for the full effect. In the meantime, I've been watching many of the vast number of covers on YouTube. A few observations:
- Amazing how many great covers there are. As much as we loved Lambert's and Joey Cook's versions, there are many more equally as good.
- I wasn't impressed with Susan Boyle on I Dreamed a Dream, but Holy Smokes! on Mad World.
- Best of the YouTube amateurs: Jasmine Thompson.
- All of the college acapella groups were awful.
- Not a lot of male/female duets, although Ashley Smith/Cody Robbins was nice.
- Best overall Gary Jules himself. This version was wonderful until the original Tears for Fears signer joined in at the end and ruined it.
- Best in the original TFF style, Smoky Plans.
- My personal favorite by Julia Westlin, who hooked me in the middle with the harmony featured over the melody for an intriguing effect.
Looking forward to seeing how Haley and PMJ differentiate themselves. It's a tall order.

As expected I am totally addicted to this song! Haley is amazing! I love what Scott did with this.

After 2 days of waiting (i.a. as someone who doesn't do itunes) it finally became available for paid download here, and I got to listen to this song. I like it! This PMJ series is getting better all the time - it deserves its own "Haley with PMJ" CD. Haley's voice has so many tones and moods and is clear and effortless in so many ways, again, new variations come up in this song all over the place - it astounds me again and again even though I know it is like that with Haley's abililties. I think this song has some colors that I've not heard from her before, and I am fascinated by the contrasts in this duet, in this version - very interesting, and a joy to listen to. They really took this song to new territory in my opinion. Fantastic! Do we know how much effort Scott and his people put into the mixing and balancing and all that? They get so much right with such quick turnarounds.

Well said, XAtlantic. Upon listening to the song a few times it seemed to me that Scott had arranged the song in a way that took Haley to some new vocal territory. After Puddles opens with song with his usual dramatic sad clown way, Haley enters the song with a totally different tone and sound. Haley always has new surprises for us.

Although Haley's voice has many colors too it, and she can cover many genres well. Her voice always sounds so perfectly retro when she covers a song that sounds like it's from the Judy Garland era.
