RE: Day 1, album #3? - Tusk - 02-09-2017
Well, He came to fame in the UK, I would think it was played there too....then again, like any child back then, I listened to what my Parents listened to...
True Story, When I came to the States, we lived w/ my Grandmother, her son, my Uncle, was only 5 years older than me, was really good at electric guitar, but learned by ear. One day, he played me some solos from songs I didn't recognise, his response?
"What? You came from England and You don't know who Led Zeppelin and the Who are?!!!"
He became my intro into an expanded universe of music and when I fell in love w/ the Eagles
So, yeah, there were definitely holes in my musical knowledge up until then lol

I didn't recognize the title, but I recognized his name and associated it with "some other song" - which I heard the second I played it. Never seen Leo perform before, just knew the song from hearing it on the radio.

I didn't realize ELO made use of classical string instruments. Or maybe I forgot.
Quote:In the late 1960s, Roy Wood—guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of the Move—had an idea to form a new band that would use violins, cellos, string basses, horns and woodwinds to give their music a classical sound, taking rock music in the direction to "pick up where the Beatles left off".[16] Jeff Lynne, frontman of fellow Birmingham group the Idle Race, was excited by the concept. In January 1970, when Carl Wayne left the Move, Lynne accepted Wood's second invitation to join the band on the condition that they focus their energy on the new project. On 12 July 1970, when Wood added multiple cellos to a Lynne-penned song intended to be a Move B-side, the new concept became a reality and "10538 Overture" became the first Electric Light Orchestra song.

Jeff Lynne (recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) was a very close friend of George Harrison's and Monty Python, one of the Traveling Wilbury's, was credited for the "ELO" Sound... If you listen to their discography, you can definitely hear the influence the Beatles had on Jeff. If I had to suggest one album to you, it would be "A New World Record" , or maybe "ELO's Greatest Hits" (which has "Evil Woman" in it) or "Out of the Blue"
Other than Jeff Lynn's distinctive vocals, the ELO sound is recognised by a classical twist to Jeff's Beatles Inspired compositions.... They even had a song called "Rockaria" a play on Rock + aria (a long, accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio) in which the story revolves around someone trying to take out a classically trained opera singer (Beethoven, Puccinni and Wagner are in the lyrics)
The use of strings, intrinsic to the song's vibe....
Also another huge hit for ELO, even here in the States, was Telephone Line, also heavy use of strings....
There was a time "Mr Blue Sky" was used in every other movie, every other commercial....possibly ELO's most lucrative song because of it's commercial use...
Behind the Beatles, ABBA and the Eagles, one of my all time favorite bands

I realize more and more each day how much of a tremendous influence The Beatles have on me and my music. I'm so glad my parents brought me and my sister up listening to them on long drives, everywhere really. Paul McCartney's RAM takes you on a evolutionary journey.
