This appears to be the week the third place finishers roared.
Casey James who finished third on the beleaguered 9th season of Idol has achieved his first top 20 on Country. “Let’s Don’t Call it a Night” has had a long crawl to this position, but it has become the most successful radio hit from that season. It’s the debut single off of his debut album.
Also hitting top 20 this week for the first time on US radio, is Canadian Idol 3rd place finisher Carly Rae Jepsen. “Call Me Maybe” has been a hit in her home country for a while, but this is her first foray into the American market. The song achieved top 20 on Pop and top 40 on HAC this week.
Another top 40 on HAC was achieved by Carrie Underwood. Her debut single from her fourth album appears to be crossing over because it’s getting an add date for that format. The song also went top 50 on AC.
Haley Reinhart who finished third from Season 10 also made in-roads on HAC. Her debut single, “Free”, from her debut album achieved top 50 in that format. She had previously charted on AC for a Christmas duet with Casey A, but this is her first solo charting song. This means that the entire top 4 from Season 10 has now charted as solo artists.
Mandisa returns to the top 40 on CAC and Lauren to the top 30 on country.

If we just can get one of the stations to give 60 spins of Free, it can move Haley from #31 to #26.
While requesting Free regularly on other stations, what if we make concerted every-day effort to request Free on these 4 idol-friendly stations, let say for one week. What if they respond and start increasing their spins of Free. It may not work, of course. But if we do not try it, we will not know whether it works. A potential payoff is high, not in terms of AI, but in terms of chart position that hopefully can bring larger stations into play.

On HAC Haley has passed both Taylor Swift and Matt Nathanson to get back to t29, and will probably pass both Calvin Harris and Nicki Minaj in the next 2 days to be at t27. Mat Kearney will be passed a few days later. Haley's pulling away from Kris Allen and Usher below her, but Alanis Morisette is advancing and will be a threat in a few days, so may cancel out Mat Kearney. The only other threat from below is Kelly Clarkson but probably not until next week. However this may all change if the spins decrease. So t27 perhaps t26 is possible in the next few days!!!!

Good news: Free is up to #28 on HAC today; it's highest rank so far!
Bad news: She lost two spins from yesterday, and if she doesn't get kick-started again with spincrease she's gonna get passed by the hard charging Alanis, Usher and Kelly in the coming days. Maybe Kris, too.

The past week I've noticed may tweets from people saying how much they like "Free" or that they're listening to it via some online service. I assume these are from people who've heard it on the radio recently for the first time. If they could build the size of the radio audience, "Free" would do as well as they hoped when they chose it for the first single.

So here is the not-so-good news: I signed up to "Rate the Music" for Sirius XM Pulse, and today I got my first music poll. I was asked to rate 30 songs, and they included "The Vision of Love" by Kris Allen. They did NOT include Haley's "Free." In fact, they included a lot of the Hot AC Top 30 songs, just not Haley's.
It did give a chance to answer a few questions about why we are or aren't listening to The Pulse more or less recently, so I did write, "I'm not. About the same as usual. In the last week I've been listening to see if you'll play the new Haley Reinhart song I'm addicted to, but you haven't been playing it much."
Hopefully someone will read that and it'll make even a slight difference?
