With a May album release date, any speculation of a single released earlier, something in April maybe? One would think, but there hasn't even been any official word of Haley being with a label. I did see in some cases with Concord they seemed to wait until three weeks out to announce an upcoming release. ... I watched a bit of a 2012 interview with the former head of A&R for Jazz at Concord. Speaking of Concord in general he said they release about 80 albums a year, but only 15 to 20 of those are new music. When asked what they looked for in signing a new artist, he said a fanbase, active touring and good management. That last one surprised me a bit. He said if someone was exceptional they would help them find a manager. It wasn't until last year that Haley fulfilled those last two requirements. He also said they have a profit and loss meeting every week. So if a person wants to sign someone, they meet with the marketing people and outline those details about the artist and the nature of the proposed project. They then put together a projection of the sales potential. So I think this project -- assuming she is with Concord -- is different in part because it's been more tightly conceived and executed. "Listen Up!" didn't use live instruments. "Better" was a hodgepodge of songs and to make it more cohesive Haley brought in live instruments to play to the demo tracks she had previously recorded. This time there was enough forethought to involve two media composers and incorporate a composition by a veteran sax player. RE: Day 1, album #3? - Tusk - 03-31-2017 I was thinking about HR3, thematically, 60's 70's, based on Haley's Spotify playlists and this performance came to mind...very organic, Rockin', Guitar-centric (think Harry) and definitely groovin' ![]() Not saying I think Pathetic will be on the album, more about representing the possible style and groove ![]() RE: Day 1, album #3? - john - 03-31-2017 From a 2007 article in Fortune. Concord has had a different marketing approach from other record companies for many years Quote:A new spin on classic records From a 2003 interview with John Burk Quote:[...]In the Fortune article he commented to the effect that PBS is Concord's MTV in selling jazz. They own a lot of catalogs of old music, which may not sell in high volume but in many cases bring in a stream of income. Outlets like YT did not exist at the time of this article but represent outlets that can put jazz or other genres in front of more people. John Burk seems to be an idea guy who often pitches ideas to performers and brings together themes and collaborators. From a Rita Coolidge interview Quote:Rita:http://luxuryexperience.com/music_scene/interviews/rita_coolidge_interview.html From Al Jurreau interview (2006) Quote:SmoothViews (SV): This seems like such an obvious match-up. How did it finally happen?http://www.smoothviews.com/interviews/jarreau1106.htm more Jarreau (2007) about same topic Quote:“Once you think about it, it’s a no-brainer. But the circumstances for it coming together were just extraordinary,” the legendary singer/songwriter, who turns 67 on March 12, said. “George, just having signed (with Concord Records), was thinking about what his first project would be. I was looking around for a new record label and begun these talks with Concord myself, but hadn’t signed yet. John Burk, really the messenger from God, put all of these things together in his head. He said ‘Hey listen, I’ve been to the mountain, and I have this letter from Big G, and I want you guys to come over to the office and let me read it to you.’ That’s exactly what happened. George and I looked at each other and said ‘Shoot, when do we start?’ We can do some music that may bring people back to the table again, where people sit down and listen to a record and enjoy a glass of wine and chill for an hour. We don’t listen like that anymore,” Jarreau added.http://smoothjazznews.com/archives/feb07/index.html Article about the re-release of Ray Charles "Genius Loves Company" with accompanying DVD (the making of the record). The triple platinum record was John Burk's idea. Quote:...The album was initially hatched at a fundraiser, but Charles only became convinced to make it due to his faith in John Burk, Concord Music Group’s chief creative officer, and co-producer of the album....http://www.popmatters.com/review/189228-ray-charles-genius-loves-company/ ![]() This one is particularly interesting if Haley's record's "mission" is to pay homage to the '60s or something like that. From an article with Dave Koz (saxophonist who has played with PMJ) [Miguel quoted from this article weeks back] Quote:John Burk, longtime producer for Concord Records, was also an important part of the team. “He was kind of like the big idea guy and he kept us focused on the mission statement of this album,” explains Koz. “We basically worked on all that together-what this album was to be. It made the decision-making process a lot easier. Every little decision was put through that sieve of: Does this fulfill our mission statement of what this album is supposed to be?” After looking through material about Burk, it appears to me that Haley's record is one of his hands-on projects. I would not be surprised to learn that Haley gets a lot of freedom on record, but also support and guidance. I'll bet she has a lot of trust in Burk and that people like those pictured below (producing horns and strings, etc) are brought in by Burk with her happy blessing. He may be perfect for her if he is doing a lot of the left brain lifting. Does he have his sieve out? ![]() RE: Day 1, album #3? - Nicicarus - 04-18-2017 A week and a half till May! Liar? ^^ This is from my HOTM interview....so you bet, I loved seeing #jamesbond.... incidentally, One of the songs on Haley's playlists was "To Sir With Love" sung by Lulu, who was HUGE in the UK back in the Day. She also performed a Bond Song, "The Man With The Golden Gun" Quote:Haley Reinhart liked your Tweet Then add to that #tarantinovibes you think 'scope'...it sounds like a 'big' song...One common sound w/ Spaghetti western and Tarantino 'sound' is a strong guitar influence.... I expect Harry's guitar to be featured heavily in this song.... I'm reminded of when I saw Harry in Wheeling, when to my surprise, he started playing "The Way" by the band Fastball. What caught my attention from Fastball, back in the day, was their stylized, almost surfer style guitar riffing...something that Harry performed perfectly on that song, and I told him so..... Listen to the guitar parts of this song, this is what I'm imagining Harry will sound like given these hashtags (Just a guess, for fun ![]() Angie commented on Haley's Instagram....
