^ Sure go for it! I've probably watched it a few times already without knowing it was yours.

Actually I never uploaded it on youtube, only facebook so I'll do it tomorrow or sometime when I can use my mom's computer since it was her camera.

Thanks for responding to my last post you guys & I apologize for not getting back any sooner than this.

RMD hit on 2 of the main points that are needed for her sophomore album to be more successful than her debut. The first is that she signs w/ a label that's interested in investing in/promoting her the way they would a non-idol new artist they believe in. What I mean by that specifically is that they agree to stick w/ Haley for a year minimum after the album drops & release no fewer than 3 singles to radio during that time.

The 2nd thing is that they get her & the band out on a series of tours during this whole time. Do you guys remember last summer, when the general consensus, over at IDF seemed to be that Interscope couldn't afford to send her out on tour w/ a full band? I feel silly even admitting thinking that now and that's part of what I meant when I said we've all been through this once now. Haley has minor national celebrity status & combined w/ a single even getting the amount of airplay "Free" was getting means she could pull in decent money touring. In most cases she'd be playing to audiences in the hundreds not thousands but then again it wouldn't be airports & Hilton Hotels either. It'd be big sleeper tour bus & Holiday Inns.

As far as the label Haley signs with, I think it's a balance between the new labels commitment to Haley & the label being big enough to get Haley a decent amount of media exposure. Haley has both ole & 19M going into it, so that's a big plus.

One label I think could be right for her, if they show a lot of interest is Hollywood Records (the label Stefano's signed to) not so much because I'm paying too much attention to what is happening w/ his career... although I will say he's only released 2 singles w/ them so far & he's still signed & has said there will be an album coming soon... as opposed to Pia who didn't get near that amount of time to release her album w/ Interscope before being dropped. They're technically an indie label (meaning not one of the 4 majors - Sony, Universal, Warner, EMI) & only have 20+ artists on their current roster, but they're owned by this little company called Disney... who owns ABC in addition to their own stations, meaning plenty of TV promo spots & the resources to play w/ the majors.

I've heard Hollywood is kind of known as a pop artists label but I notice Queen is singed w/ them as well as alt rock bands Breaking Benjamin & The Plain White Ts. Plus there are two artists, signed w/ Hollywood, that are right it Haley's lane. One is Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. The other is ZZ Ward. I follow both of these bands but especially ZZ. The main reason is that I've become a huge fan of her since last summer. But also because I wanted to watch an artist, who is comparable to Haley in a lot of ways, rise to fame the conventional way and see what I could learn from that. Right now ZZ is about where Haley was in July - 1st album, 1st single toward the end of it's cycle. I expect the 2nd single will be released in April. Anyway, the mix of touring, live on-air radio promo, radio airplay, TV promo, internet advertising, & videos shot for youtube seems very well thought out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Idol_alumni_album_sales

Can Haley beat the odds & break the post Idol mold? I think so, and I would love, love, love to see her do it. But I think in order for that to happen, she's going to need a really good album & a label that takes the approach of promoting her the way they would a non-Idol new artist (albeit w/ a larger established fan base than the typical new artist) and a good plan for doing it.

We've all been through this once w/ Listen Up, so I think most of us know at least some of the obstacles she'll be facing. So what are some of these and what kinds of things will Haley need to do to overcome them?

That list on Wiki lists the top selling Idols of all time. Most of them sold over a million their first time out.Eliot Yamin is listed last and he sold just shy of 700,000.

Haley is starting form a much lower base-Listen Up sold around 60,000.Haley,like everyone else will need a "hit" -or at least a successful single. That doesn't mean that she has to sell a million copies of it-or even say,500,000.There are many artists who are out touring in support of an album and they're not selling those kinds of numbers.Allen Stone tours all over the world on a regular basis and I'd be surprised if he had a single that sold half a million.Everything is relative.

Haley says that her next album will be "blusier".Given her range that could mean all kinds of things. We'll just have to see.

Actually there are two parts to that list. The top part shows the idols who've had at least one RIAA certified gold record. The 2nd part shows idols that haven't. Haley & Casey are about mid-way down the 2nd part. The drawback to the list is that it goes by Brian Mansfield's reported numbers & he can't see Billboard numbers for Idols categorized as pop artists, unless, like Casey they didn't crack the top 100 (then they're on the heatseakers chart), once the drop out of the Top 200 (Current) chart, so "Listen Up" is listed at 44,000 even though it's probably more like 65,000 at this point.

And you're right artists don't need to sell massive amounts of records to be able to tour extensively because they make money thru touring.

RE: Next album will be blusier - midnightblues - 03-05-2013

Haley Has to have more that 50.000 fans. I thought LU would go gold (500.000) Touring is the way to go especially if you have a good sponsorship.

I felt like it was an indication she didn't have a champion at the label; there wasn't anyone with any power in her corner. So they applied whatever formula the label uses to determine whether to invest more or not. Whatever that calculation was it didn't include her "minor celebrity status" and the quality of her album. Their decisions were tied to how "Free" fared.

That's good info. How did ZZ's single fare?

Story about her from yesterday:
Quote:Since her breakout performance at last year’s South By Southwest festival, she’s done everything from releasing her full-length debut album, “Till the Casket Drops,” to touring with notable rising stars, including Kendrick Lamar, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Gary Clark Jr., and Allen Stone. Needless to say, she’s been busy, and she’s getting ready for another round of South By Southwest, which began on Friday.

Miguel - TBH, the reasons Interscope might've had for not sending Haley out on tour baffles me. I think you're right, that it was tied to how the single (and the album) performed, but the thing is that touring would've helped both single & album sales in addition to bringing in extra money. It could be that they aren't interested in playing on a smaller scale when it comes to idols. They either hit big or are released after a short period of time. I do think Haley benefited, in a lot of ways, from being w/ Interscope though & I do think there will be other labels interested in her that'll be more than happy w/ the kind of money she's capable of bringing in, even in the early stages getting her career established.

Overall sales of ZZ's first single, "Put the Gun Down" probably isn't much different than how "Free" performed for Haley. But I think that's sort of typical of a new artists first single. Here are some numbers:

The Video for ZZ's first single was posted on youtube July 17, 2012. So far it has 1,638,336 views. So it's been out roughly 7 1/2 months & is averaging about 218,000/mo. "Free" was posted on youtube Mar 29th, 2012. So far it has 2,182,358 views. It's been out about 11 months & for a rough average of 198,000/mo. Which is real comparable in fact "Free" probably out performed "Put the Gun Down" a little through the 1st 7.5 months.

I don't think "Put the Gun Down" was released to radio until the album came out on Oct. 16th. The first time I heard it played on my Alternative in KC was around that time but I wasn't hearing it much until mid December... After ZZ was part of their "The Night The Buzz Stole Christmas" concert at the Midland. On itunes the single has been anywhere from 40-100 on the itunes Alternative singles chart since the album came out.

Her album "Til the Casket Drops", debuted at #72 on Billboard, but then was off the chart the next week & hasn't returned to the Top 200... not yet anyway. However, the lowest I've ever seen it on itunes was at #304 on the Overall chart shortly before Christmas, usually it's somewhere between 100-200 on the Overall chart..#25-#40 on the Alternative chart. She's been on tour w/ Delta Rae since the beginning of Feb playing large bars/small theaters & usually gets on-air promo at the local alternatives, earlier in the day. Today they're in New York & she must've gotten some great promo on Sirius XM because her album shot up from about #150 to... #81 at the moment.

I expect she'll break big sometime this spring or summer. She has 7 shows at SXSW on a bigger stage than last year, plus she's playing a bunch of big festivals including Sasquatch & FireFly.

Part of the reason for this obnoxiously long post about another artist is that I'd love to see Haley form strong connections w/ as many other up & coming artists on the bluesier side on modern rock as she can. I think she'll have an easier time getting airplay for one thing. And ZZ & Haley have some peeps in common... Chiara, Rob Kleiner, & Allen Stone, plus they're both starting out of the LA scene, so she might be someone Haley could do some shows w/ and possibly even go out on tour w/ at some point.

RE: Next album will be blusier - Miguel - 03-06-2013

I like ZZ Ward. But it's really aggravating to see her touring and performing on Carson Daly with a full band. She's also playing the Fort Worth Music Festival in May with Allen Stone. Their site says "more bands to be announced soon" so I sent them a message suggesting Haley. ZZ also recently performed on a SW Airlines flight like Casey Abrams did. Imagine how perfect Haley singing "Let's Run Away" would be for a flight to a beach destination.

Yeah it seems like every signed band w/ an album out gets to play all over the place w/ their full band... except Haley, who only gets to do it every once in a while. It boggles my mind. Maybe John is really Courtney in a wig.

Sometimes ZZ just performs w/ her guitar player, like for the in-studio radio performances & on airplanes. I think that's a great idea about Haley singing "Let's Run Away" on SW Airlines. People would love it & maybe SW would get the idea to use it for their commercials. It'd be perfect.

Yeah there's a lot of those big summer music festivals (probably all culminating w/ Lollapalooza). ZZ's playing at least Sasquatch, Firefly, Ft. Worth, KanRocksas, & there's one in the Ozarks. Alot of the newer artists play a bunch of those because they're great for gaining new fans.
