I remember Haley wanting to do the eleven minute version of "Que Sera" too, and being talked out of it.
I'm not in love with Jimmy, but I do think he helped a bit. I think anyone would help a bit.
I mean, using MK as an example..
First, Slezak was right when he pointed out Randy's ludicrous advice to her was "You gotta make sure you do your best." At first I thought "To be fair, that could be edited" But Slezak's right..it is edited. Edited to show Randy in the best light. And THAT was the best advice he gave her?
But even further, I don't think it's a coincidence that when you a contestant who struggles with stage presence/the performing aspect of being on the stage..( she looks nervous.) That her best effort in that area was after being coached by Adam Lambert. (Who quite frankly, was easily the best in that area that Idol has ever had.) Even this week, she sings beautifully, but the staging was awkward and she likes to either let her arm hang there or do those scotty like hip hop motions.
And it is a shame, because like others have said...this year's contestants have a lot of untapped potential. They need people helping them. Emily was a really poor loss to the competition, and it could have very easily been prevented.

Babbs, Tusk, and mercfan, in making different points, you've each touched on valid issues in this year's group of contestants: i.e. lack of decent, much less professional, mentoring and good vocal coaches with expectations (i.e. Debra ["You're gonna die, you're gonna die out there"] Byrd).
And, while this is only the fourth year that I've followed AI from the outset (I didn't start paying attention to it until the Falling Slowly duet that Crystal and Lee performed when there were four left in Season 9), this year seems to have had the most raw, and under prepared talent that I've witnessed in the past 3 seasons.
And with the exception of Rush Week, when Chris and Adam were there to help out, this "not ready for prime time" group has had absolutely zero real guidance to help them.. That's unconscionable.
And Babbs, if AI wasn't wasting $10 mil on RJ, they could/would/should have the budget flexibility that would allow them to bring in some decent mentors.
This group of contestants has a right to feel, if not downright angry (and, actually, I think they would be justified for that), then certainly disappointed by how little AI is really providing.

I guess you could reconcile those two viewpoints as: (1) He was excited Haley chose BATJ (2) He was disappointed in the arrangement she chose. So he stuck to the original.

I reallly blame the band's lack of practice together (and who knows if they'd be wondeful together, but they haven't had a chance to jel and it shows (to me) in ways that make all the performances lackluster). I was hyper crtical of The Voice band the first two seasons but I am loving them in every performance the last two seaons.. some incredibly so, but even when they do something simple they do the simple very elegantly in ways that keep a life to a song while entierly show casing the singer through the support around (but not over) them.
But,, onto the Iovine thing.
I never liked his opining on who the viewers would like. But.. I suppose that Making judgments like that is how he has earned a living (and kept hundreds of people employeed and had money to take risks on new artists even if they only had one pull at a lotto ticket before he dropped them.... they dodn't seem to give very many second chances... even to those that had a couple mega hits before the "what have you done for me lately" rule was the ruder reality for their survival)
I DID actually come to believe that he knew a few things about music. He also had the humilty/realism (funny to use a word humility with him as he seems a bit full of himself) to recognize where his limitations were but who he could call to get the job done in ways that let his actual talent contribute.
I think of a few sessions with Iovine and Will.I.am .. People have talked about the "serious bang-age" with BATJ recently. I'll also point out the "You're Beautiful"
The "GET" part really made the Haley's entire interpretation of the song go. The affirmative resolve to "show them that you're beatiful" .don't let the worldl keep you down... go lead not follow etc... all came from that "get" that .. Haley "got" which , if the clip was at all honest, came from the union of minds between Iovine and William.
My impression was that Iovine has this sort of itch .. "we need something something is missing .. its missing in here..waht do you think Will ? " and.. for whatever reason... the "odd couple" ... the short 60 year old guy from brookyn and the tall 40 year r&b/hiphop guy from east LA had a way of reading each other's minds. Idol didn't seem to be bringing in Will.i.am for star power... it looked like Iovine really wanted help from who he worked with best which happened to be Will.
I don't think will was really the factor... it was Iovine, who expressed to Will, what will could recognize and put a finger on and find and artistic representation, to share back with Iovine and the singer. Now of course, it was ALSO HALEY's ability to be a full interactive participant in that search for discovery. Singers who didn't have anything to share in the trial and error couldn't be saved by Will and Iovine yet....the process sure worked.
I loved the way Iovine, with the steady collaboration of Will.i.am got Scotty to do that hip hop version of Elvis Presley's "thats all right momma"
What is astounding.. it that I just noticed....
Scotty did virtually the same version at The Grand Ole Opry appearance almost 2 years later !
watch the video again of the studio footage with Iovine and William and the crew and see the "you got to be kidding me" sort of look on Scotty's face still not really sure about what he had been encouraged to grow into...certainly Scotty was a huge part of the creative collaboration but he needed to be pushed hard..

Anyway, Iovine brought a lot to the table musically even if he is a bit of an asshole... and a crass businessman in a business that unfortunately seemed to demand that in the past.
The people around the idols not only led to better performances but helped them grow in lasting ways and.. well Iovine did contribute his own bit to that.. the more bits the kids get the better.

I like Iovine and never had a problem with him on Idol. Though I might wish he had been more protective of Haley at Interscope, I feel like he brought the new guy in to run the label so he could focus his attention on Beats. Haley was given some artistic control over her debut album and I'm grateful for that.
