Funny, I think I've only heard one example of it and don't remember what song -- maybe, from something on the StageIt show last fall? But usually Haley's vibrato is not quick and is quite lovely. NUG, I'd agree with you about Jessica's vibrato, but besides it's quickness, what gives it that "goaty" sound (LOL!) is that Jessica's singing is quite nasal (the primary reason I don't care for her singing), and that combined with the speed of her vibrato is what tends to lend itself to a "goatlike" quality. RE: American Idol 2014 - NUG - 03-26-2014 Yes, nasally is it. My son loves to sing in the shower, he's also a keyboard player in a band and "sings" in it as well. He is SO nasally, I don't want to hurt his feelings, but I've tried to explain singing from the diaphragm. Subtly offered singing lessons lol. RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 03-26-2014 A new generation's introduction to Stevie Nicks and Rhiannon. You know, the nasal "cavity" (it's been awhile, but I think that's the right term) is a really unpredictable element in a voice. There's "nasal" like Jessica, your son, and probably thousands of singers -- and then there's "nasal" like Barbra Streisand, which is a completely different sound. I don't know the specifics about it, except that it has something to do with how you direct the air, and fill that chamber and mouth. Beyond that, I don't know how much it can be developed. It may depend on the space each person has to begin with, and that's not really something one can do much about. (I'm not a voice teacher -- go to TVLine and correspond with Angie_Overrated or kateshomesick for specifics.) RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 03-26-2014 They were much better this week. I liked Alex's arrangement, but I also agreed with JLO about it zapping the life out of the song. I really liked Jess' performance, but I knew I was going too. That was the most comfortable she's looked on stage so far, and I think SN fits her like a glove. I'm interested in hearing the studio version of that song..I had always wished we'd gotten one from Haley. Caleb's good every week. I'm not a fan, but he's good every week. And Jena! Finally I really liked her on something that wasn't her original song. Predictions: Majesty, Sam, Dexter in the bottom 3. The above 3 aren't going to be in there. CJ seems to be untouchable. The only other possibility is Alex, but he was significantly better than these three. RE: American Idol 2014 - Babbs234 - 03-26-2014 I agree with you mercfan, the show was much better tonight. What an improvement! And I liked the band on stage with the performers. Jena, wow, what a voice! I thought she sounded great. She reminded me of Haley in how she controls her voice and is quite the powerhouse singer (like Haley) when she wants to bring it ![]() I'm not a big fan of Caleb either, but he killed it tonight. He looked like a star! And Jess, yes, Rhiannon was the perfect song for her voice. This was my favorite song of hers. ( except then I had to go and listen to Haley's version like 3 times. ![]() I like Alex too, but these ^^ 3 brought more memorable performances IMO. Malaya seems to be coming into her own too. And Majesty looks so pretty. I love her look. AI is shaping up. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - kaypea - 03-26-2014 (03-26-2014, 07:13 PM)My Alter Ego Wrote:(03-26-2014, 06:51 PM)NUG Wrote: Yes, nasally is it. I think that you're right to mention Streisand when talking about the word "nasal".Nasal,by itself doesn't have to be a negative or mean unpleasant.I think that Stevie Nicks has that kind of quality to her voice. And Haley can sound that way sometimes. And I don't thnk you need to try and explain it scientifically or whatever. But with someone like Jessica "nasal",to me often also sounds "pinched" and that ,along with the fast vibrato that people are mentioning causes the word "goaty" to come to mind. There may some qualities to her voice that I like but in the end its the nasal quality that's a turn off. As for everyone else and as far as the show this year-there may have been some improvement tonight -and I tried to give it a chance but TBH -I think its gonna be a long haul between now and the end of the tour. RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 03-27-2014 A few random thoughts. It does seem to be getting better. I liked almost all of the performances, although I didn't care for Dexter's ditty and it's time for CJ to go home. Jessica did look comfortable and professional and I liked the little country sound her voice gave Rhiannon. Alex knows his lane well, although he will need to change it up a bit in coming weeks. Caleb was strong as usual, but JLo's bouncing around made me flashback to the performance below -- with Caleb now taking the Josh Krajcik slot and JLo striving to fill Nicole Scherzinger's shoes. I found that distracting. RE: American Idol 2014 - Tom22 - 03-27-2014 That was a night and day 180 degree on reversal on the band last night. Wrote the essays elsewhere but wanted to be sure to say that here , because I criticized their early work pretty pointedly here. I bought a number of songs last night (and I typically only buy 5 or so a season on these singing shows) almost exclusively on the basis of enjoying the band arrangements, tight groove, and what I thought was some really compelling playing..even on a song or two with a singer with pitch problems that weren't bad enough on the studio versions to distract me from the over all product. Their take on the Led Zeppelin song floored me... it wasn't nearly as straightforward cover as some who were primarily focused on Calebs unselfish performance made out. They dug in with a different sort of attitude (not that the original didn't, but they're different in some subtle ways that took some cues from music styles that developed after LZ recorded it) - I felt the Band 100% heard someone's criticisms that included what bothered me and raised the game beyond to giving me my favorite types of things... ![]() ![]() ![]() ---- I followed your conversation on Jessica and the Goat vibrato... It made me think of Feta cheeze ... Feta Cheese (which is goat cheese) tastes pretty bad unless you like it. But, I don't think any of you that don't like Feta doubt that lots of people like Feta cheese. That's a great bit about all of you hear is that you'll say "I don't like it" rather than "Its bad" . Its also kind of hard to judge better Feta from worse Feta if you don't like it. Somehow between the Goat reference and a rough link in my mind between sour and Nasal.. and Feta has a sort of sour taste, it made a decent comparison. I'm not such a Nasal-Goat vibrato fan that I really had a developed taste of the nuances within .. but, well I think Gyro's go better with Feta cheese. I like a tasty Sonoma Pepper Jack cheese better in almost all circumstances, and if I judged the cheese alone, I might say the cheese on the gyro with Sonoma Jack had better cheese.... ... but as a whole, a smooth cheese with a peppery kick doesn't belong on a gyro...neither it or the gyro are at their best light. I guess Rhinnon is sort of a Gyro that isn't at its most haunting without a touch of a dark unsettled situation. When the song is sung with a beautifully-smooth yet peppery voice singing it the song loses something unique it has to it. Haley isn't witch...maybe the good witch from the.... .... Mystical , but not quite dark with an almost attraction to the forboding Rhiannon seems to call for . : ) Haley' has written herself some awesome mystical good witch songs ! Ok.. that was my poetry for this board -- oops (puts on his Colombo trench coat) ...they really wanted to play up the unjust/unfair bad attitude impression by making haley pretend to be a witch in their first sonng and a angry vengeful, resentful, unmarried mother with the second song they picked for her. Mel Brooks would make that producer discussion pretty funny.. what can we do to her....""I know I know. a Witch" RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 03-27-2014 Tom, for some reason your description reminded me of monty python, with idol judges and producers shouting that Haley turned them into a newt. I also agree, the band was significantly better. Perhaps it's better for them to be on stage with the contestants as well. The great thing about good contestants..like Jess and Candice..is that they can take songs Haley has done, but do them different. Jess' Rhiannon has more grit..is more dark. Haley's was more ethereal. It wasn't bad witch versus good witch, so much as witch versus goddess. (And I'm not saying that to say anything negative about Jessica..I just mean in an interpretation.) I also agree, that it's really nice on this board..to hear "she's not my type." "She's not what I prefer." Because too often, people claim an artist they don't like is "bad." Instead of just realizing they don't like that style. (That's not to say that some contestants on these shows aren't mediocre..but for instance..Haley is very talented, she's just an acquired taste. She's got a distinctive tone and loves to improvise. I love that. Some people don't. But on a technical level, she's absolutely brilliant. Bria Kelly, on The Voice..is already getting the "stop screaming" comments. That's her style of singing..and I absolutely love it. She shows an extended range, along with power..along with the ability to growl. She can sing smoothly and raspy. Some people just don't like her style. It doesn't mean she's not talented.) |
