A month or two ago I was suggesting that Haley should work on some of her songs a little more before recording them. This, as opposed to meeting a couple new writers, crafting a song together, and recording it immediately – as seemed to be the typical scenario with LU songs. While perhaps long on spontaneity, such an approach potentially sacrifices much. We’ve seen Haley change up her interpretation of a song in creative ways after singing it a number of times, with delightful results. As a routine, the one day, one song approach seems a formula with a risk of cranking out McSongs.
I read about a comment recent from Haley to the effect that some of the new material wasn’t ready for prime time yet, and found this heartening. I’m delighted to see her performing some new stuff before she has an album out. Perhaps these songs are recorded and ready for release when it is deemed time, but my hope is that she continues try out some of her new material and let it evolve or ripen a little before any final studio sessions.
As part of the recent discussion, I mentioned that the Beatles spent a lot of time in the studio developing many (of Haley’s favorite) songs before they recorded them. YouTube is full of recordings of Take #25 or Take #38 of various classic Beatles songs. MAE asked whether they did this early in their career, and I would have to say no. Only a superstar group (particularly one that gave up touring) can afford the costs and time necessary to spend large amounts of time in a studio. However, the studio part is not necessary to polish songs. The Beatles lived on the stage during the early part of their career, especially while in Hamburg, which provided the time and practice to develop songs as well as performance skills.

In his book, Outliers, Malcolm Galdwell examined characteristics of highly successful, talented and impactful people (e.g Bill Gates, Mozart). One of his themes is the “10,000 hour rule” which proposes that it takes about that much time in an activity to become a master of it.

I’m meandering, but trying to express my hope that Haley does spend some time performing – with a band, whether Midnight or another – honing her skills and developing her sound and style. While Haley has talent that can take her in many directions, she is writing songs that are bluesy and rocky. I think the way she can fully “find” herself musically is to sing with a strong band backing her in venues where the audience is appreciative and close. And improve the songs she ultimately records as part of the process. Haley's recent journey to her musical home was eye opening for me, and it would make me happy if it was for her too.

sooner or later musicians have to come back to there roots to remain true to themselves Hales is no different. As Randy would say Welcome back back. She can put soul into her tunes. I love the blues.

Come on guys, let's do it! I dont have a twitter account, but I did email BG Days, and let them know what a great show Haley and Midnight put on, and asked for a repeat next year.

Tusk...love the new Haley Comes Alive concert...you did it! An awesome amount of Haley love
went into that. If Haley needs to meet the 10,000 hour rule, I think you supplied 5000 of those hours...

I'm excited to watch the whole concert when I get off work today. Thank you, Tusk, for all your hard work in bringing this to us. It's funny, the show didn't feel anything like an hour and a half for me at the time. It flew by in the way great concerts do.
