RE: American Idol 2014 - midnightblues - 04-09-2014 He's one toke over the line. RE: American Idol 2014 - NUG - 04-09-2014 Yes Harry was acting wierd - the girl on the shoulders in particular was very strange. Jess's Call Me was not as good as Haley's, and I say that with complete impartiality LOL! It's not my favorite Haley performance either, but I liked the energy Haley brought, so so much better. RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-09-2014 I'd say Jess' performance was pretty awful. She needed to strut, have attitude with that song, and she had none, she was walking like she was strolling through the park. The vocal wasn't good enough to cover for the lack of personality in her performance. I'm officially off Jess' bandwagon. IMO she's been average to subpar, vocally, in recent weeks, and shows no sign of any kind of improvement. She is, who and what she is.... ![]() At times, it sounded like she was bleating that song..... ![]() I think this season will be known for not having one growth arc (Maybe Malaya, but she is still too young to put the whole package together, inconsistent). These guys are, IMO, basically the same as they've been since the live voting started. Kind of speaks to the apparent lack of guidance they are getting behind the scenes... I wish Jessica had chosen a different song. I thought her vocals were good but agree with the sentiment of the judges. I think if a contestant this season did what Haley did, they'd love it. Haley rocked it and sang that shuffle, and released into it completely and went into the party, and tapped into the call me part. ![]() ![]() Add: I haven't seen it all yet but I thought Sam sucked. They are trying to make him something he is not. CJ was mess. No growth arc with those two. I put Dexter above them. Jena -- I like her stage presence but I don't like her voice. I liked Alex and Caleb the best but a bit of the sameness going on. Harry - LOL. I think Idol is trying to emulate the banter and playfulness of the judges that you see on The Voice. Harry tries. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - buzzenator - 04-09-2014 ^^ My thoughts too Tusk. The whole Idol experience is winding down. The creative input is not there and they can't seem to figure out the direction they need to go to save the show. Harry started out fine, but now he is getting really creepy. JLo looks like she needs a restraining order. The one bright spot tonight was the mentoring of David Cook. From the reaction of the contestants and the things we could see, this was one of the finest mentoring sessions ever. This topic has come up before about using former contestants (I was thinking of one they should bring in...HER initials are HER). It really points out that Randy has not been doing his job. As Steven Tyler said: "Randy's not a singer". Did anyone else think the opening with each contestant saying, "I'm the next American Idol" was pretty lame, with extra cheese? ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-09-2014 I agree that there isn't much happening with respect to growth arcs, but aside from Haley who showed big growth in season 10? I'm curious since I didn't actually watch Season 10 except as individual performances after the show ended. RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-09-2014 I think Scotty did, he started off a raw, deep voiced, and kind of goofy talent. By the end, he was much more polished and stage ready. James also improved, his performances became more focused and polished, his vocals were also honed from the screaming banshee he started as. He could've improved more, but the judges were blind to, or were told to ignore where he could improve. He ended the season too cocky, complacent, which opened the door for Haley to break through to 3rd. Of course, Haley's was the ultimate growth arc, constant bottom 3 resident to ending up 3rd place ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-09-2014 (04-09-2014, 10:54 PM)Tusk Wrote: I think Scotty did, he started off a raw, deep voiced, and kind of goofy talent. Yeah, from what I saw of Scotty he was Howdy Dowdy early on. He, like others, really polished it up on the tour, too. JLo looks like she needs a restraining order. Those are my thoughts too Tusk & Buzz. Harry is pushing his own attempts at entertaining his personal audience to a silly extreme. This remaining contestant group is only a half step above Karaoke and not entertaining me one bit. I've been using my fast forward more than I ever have for idol. Even Ryan Seacrest seems tired of the same old stuff. They always seem to have Jena's mic volume too low. She does remind me of Lea Michelle from Glee, but not as attractive and not ready for primetime. Caleb is a bit full of himself. I'm most interested in Jess Meuse but I seem to get disappointed after each of her performances. RE: American Idol 2014 - lauraliz - 04-10-2014 I haven't written too much this year. It's been pretty boring. I liked Harry--but he certainly is acting goofy in the last few weeks. I don't know if this is because the producers have told him to lighten up because his critiques are technical & serious--or what. Maybe they are trying to compete with The Voice. It's strange The only good thing is that JLO looks really pissed haha My fave now is Jess. I do like her voice. Too bad her stage presence is really lacking. I just think she is comfortable in her own element. It might work for her outside the show--but it doesn't make great tv. I like a lot of artists who wouldn't work well in a AI environment. I loved the chord changes in Alex's arrangement--right up my alley. However, they didn't work with the song. He should write a new song using those chords--cause that is essentially what he did (except for the lyrics). He has zero stage presence as well. Caleb is Ok. I'm not a big fan of those power ballads and I actually hate "Faithfully" from the first time I heard it back in the day. But, that's just me. At least he performs. Jena does pretty well for her age--I like her. Sam needs a few years to learn how to connect & Malaya needs a few years to work on her vocals.CJ has to learn how to sing on key. Dexter sings pretty well. However, I really didn't care for his performance last night. IMO, that song is supposed to have humor--and he played it too straight. I always really liked that song. It's one of my guilty one hit wonder pleasures ![]() The best thing about the evening was def David Cook. TPTB should hire him as a permanent mentor or judge. He did playthe idol game to perfection and he's articulate. |
