lauraliz, I'm with you on Precious! That melody is so intricate -- it has a serpentine quality about it in spots and the intervals (between notes) aren't where the ear automatically goes. And Casey's harmony is fabulous, as is his playing.
Without doubt, that was the highlight of the show for me!

I love the way u describe the melody as "serpentine"' --damn that's perfect. ITA with u. Precious is an incredible work of musical art IMO. Caley did a magnificent job with it. I mean--Haley's voice is just gorgeous. She's has an incredible ear. The melody is so unexpected--it's not easy to do that. And talk about ear--Casey singing harmony to that--blows me away. I don't know how he did it. Plus, he is playing the bass at the same time. And these kids did this song LIVE.
No BS fixing it up in the studio. I have so much respect for their talent. I get so pissed off that people don't get how good they are.
I know Sail gets all the views and I love it too. But, Precious is so outrageous. I don't think many realize how hard that was to do well and probably don't know what a fantastic song they are hearing. But. I know musical tastes are subjective.
I very rarely listen to pop music. But, almost every time I hear a pop song on tv or in a store etc--the melody and lyrics are just so mediocre (IMO) I know what the chord change is gonna be before it happens--and I'm talking about the 1st time I hear it. This is because the change is totally expected. Or worse, the chord never changes at all. That drives me CRAZY. A song can have simple chord changes and be nice. But, somewhere in the song--they have to go somewhere different. And songs don't do that much anymore

lauraliz, trust me - I know your pain, perhaps, more than you experience it. While this isn't what led me to listening to classical music -- and, ultimately, jazz -- it is why I settled and find my musical and, to a large degree, intellectual sustenance in those genres.
On the other hand, more people prefer and find comfort in what's familiar. You probably know that, but give yourself a pat on the back for wanting more.

I prefer to think of Precious as outstanding. To me, it's musically interesting. That rarely happens for me. But you're right -- many will not recognize the intricacies of this song. And some may eschew it because it lacks the musical (?) comfort they seek.

Yes, Casey's musical ear is, at least, as good as Haley's. However, and this is where you & I begin to diverge. I know that harmony would be second nature to Casey and he likely doesn't have to think about it. (It is for me, and I don't think I have a tenth of Casey's talent!) And, then one must add in the bass, which is doing a counter rhythmic pattern (and different notes) which, for most of us, really mixes it up -- a far more complex version of "rubbing one's head, while patting one's stomach," if you will. It's a complex "couplet" of activities, yet Casey makes it seem effortless -- and, with Casey, it very well may be.
Early on here on Haleyfans, I stated that I suspected or wouldn't be surprised if Casey had a "genius" IQ. He may not be at "genius" level, but his IQ is high -- very high. And, I suspect that his mind races in many directions -- quickly -- all. the. time. Which means that the form of "multi-tasking" that his simultaneous playing/singing may benefit, ultimately yielding enjoyable things to his audiences. I don't know that, but what I can see (and that is important, because it is limited) and comments made here might suggest that. (Yup, I'm resorting to "researcher speak" sans much data documentation.)

Interestingly, I write a started a Michelle Chamuel thread in the other idol/voice/xfactor board. She gave a Tedx talk, and one of the things she talked about was the structure of pop music. Number one, There is an actual mathematical format too it.
But it is written in a way that makes our brain want to hear the song again. Essentially, the chords in the verses are the "home" chords, which is where our brain wants the song to end, but the chords in the chorus stray from those chords. The song of course, ends in the chorus..and we press repeat. When she did a demonstration, everyone in the room could "feel" it, when she didn't go on to finish.
So I think that's part of what you are describing. But I also think, some people innately know what chords and notes that work in that way in our brain. Perhaps that is what you are experiencing.
And I actually think Haley is very much that way. Her runs..she finishes them, and picks notes that simply fit together..and they are improvised. Some artists don't finish their runs, some artists have a few standard runs they stick too...but Haley just gets them right.

Sean Radcliff is the son of two of Harry & Patti's good friends Bob & Lori. Sean played in Haley's Band - I believe it was the Rastatutes. Not sure why, but "Sail" had been hanging around as 3rd/4th most viewed/28 days hovering around 3,800 views for the last 3-4 months, but for some reason, it got a boost to take the #1 position the last 28 days w/ 4,707 views AND 68 likes...
Also, my previous high of 211-213 subscribers per 28 days has been convincingly topped today with 233 in the last 28 days!!
Not only that but for some reason my Subscribers number jumped 16 in a matter of hours. 22 more to 2500
