RE: Making it her own - buzzenator - 12-14-2012 ^ Thanks RMD, very nice article...and it was unexpected to here that it was a very bad day for Jimmy Iovine (hat tip to John) during the house cleaning. Which begs the question, where were all the Halien super-sleuths on this story? Disappointed! As Haley has stated many times, "We'll see what happens"...Undone happened. Go with it. ![]() The Buzz reached the 1000 mark...probably have to update my posting phrase... ![]() RE: Making it her own - Tom22 - 12-14-2012 (12-14-2012, 07:38 AM)buzzenator Wrote: ......(Undone) that Haley co-wrote and is one of "her babies", which seems to be pulling away from the rest of the pack, become something she can not get behind. It's not logical. It doesn't make any business sense. Given that her parents have to be a part of her team...they must be explaining that it doesn't matter which song people like the most, 'give em' what they want. Those sorts of questions are what keeps me interested in these forums. I love a mystery I don't think my opinions on things are worth more than that, but by writing my thoughts and theories out I get to hear what other people have to add and correct and sway with counter points and.. well we get to unravel the mysteries a bit ... or when the answers are later revealed we get to look back and postmortem our detective skills. That's all fun, and if some useful input floats to the top of a general flotasam of opinions, (where finally after testing ideas "best practice" type words come into focus) so much the better. --- Personally I don't think it is complicated at all why the deal fell appart. I think the "house cleaning" is the true answer, and I think that over time the industry has learned that they must clean house each and every year and cut all acts that haven't yet hit it big. They will miss a few but they'll also stop wasting resources on another couple dozen (yes, if you look at it they have dozens of not really big names on their labels.. they bring them in, hope some hit, then move o) As crass at that might sound to us, all businesses need to make rules from themselves to avoid wasting greater amounts of time. I know that most high end contractors doing home remodels and additions will routinely throw away extra wood and materials that they will certainly use again on another job and which might cost $50 or $100 and even $200 dollars a piece.. hundreds all told in a load. When they're paying $25 an hour which turns into $45 fully loaded with their side of taxes and enormous workers comp insurance rates, the time of loading the stuff up, and eve worse, the time tripping over it in their shop and contemplating for 10 minutes here and there whether they have extra in the shop etc wastes far more time than the materials are worth. Sometimes they might get it right , but in some they get it wrong far too often and even worse, even if money is saved net of the time costs, projects take longer (adding a few hours here and there) from the distractions. The building contractor will sometimes let their own employees grab the good stuff that they're throwing away on their own time and take home to their personal homes (although they usually make a rule against that to prevent employees from over ordering, they'll look the other way when they know how the mistake was made). So, back to the record label. To be efficient, and be sure they have all of their energies always to commit to their known winners, they must cut acts regularly that might have future prospects .. "clean house" regularly ... and go full bore at what is working presently or what they're taking their first shot. (I'm sure statistics have shown them over the decades that their first shot has the highest odds of success and the rates of mega hits developing slowly are lower on average even if they happen regularly.. they are less regular.) As others have said, that is where smaller labels come in. Their job, or their "niche" is often honing through the acts passed over. They rely more on their own judgement about quality I'd imagine and they have bars of sucess that might not meet the bars that the big labels have. I could see a smaller label perhaps thinking.. "we can make money if we can sell 200k units of this album which we know we can do through these channels if we do xy&z" where that definition of sucess would be a failure for the bigger label "wasting time and resources". In that light, its not so much that the big label is even making a mistake ... they may find they missed an opportunity but they still have skin in that game too.. if they were wrong, it could be that the artist needed what the smaller label brought to the picture and the big label will consequently sell a lot of units of the first albums they still own a piece of. Anyway.. i'm repeating ideas others have brought up and I'm running with them a bit. I think, maybe I just hate the blame game and what can rub me as bitterness.. I probably over react to that sort of thing which is a problem of mine in itself ( : ) ) RE: Making it her own - Himm2 - 12-14-2012 I do think it's as simple as that Tom...House Cleaning. I don't believe any ruffling the feathers of the big boys had much to do with the breakup. All I have to do is hear Haley singing "Free" to feel that it was an amicable split in the best interest of both parties. But I'm known to be naive. Its not much consolation but it sounds like she was part of a massive house cleaning by Interscope.I'm sure she wasn't the only one who must have suffered from lack of promo, etc. They must have been stretched pretty far. Best was to look at it IMO it was time for her to move on ![]() RE: Haley Reinhart on Interscope Split: "I'll Find Another Great Home" - Tom22 - 12-14-2012 Another good thing.. not only will she have a new group working for her, she still should have the old relationships on her side: While the old big label isn't going to push Haley's act/performance above their current artists, they do have some incentive to see her do well. ( It's not clear they were ever pushing her above their current major acts.) At this point, with the advance and the production costs behind them, they'll get almost all (less some fee's to writers ? ) of any additional listen-up records that sell ... if Haley's appearance somewhere isn't going to bump out their own artist her appearaces will make them money. Another 100k listen up sales would make them 500k to $ 1 million "found money" . Should Haley find an audience in entirely different ways (see Jenifer Hudson, etc) Listen Up could still sell many times that ... all money they didn't count on and from a past investment. Good relations with more people just keep adding up in the business. They might not have the right artist to fill in at the last minute at a star studded even and still recommend Haley. I wouldn't be surprised if that Ali , Slash thing came about because Fergies schedual (or someone else) changed last minute. I don't think studios think very much about what fan's say but still, I don't think fan's bad mouthing her past relations necessarily help people in the industries general "taste in their mouth" .. despite their active mind to entirely ignore fans. Saying positive things about the past can only help.. saying negative things won't help. I'm glad to see all the attitudes here going through the normal "grieving" process (denial, anger, acceptance ) RE: Making it her own - john - 12-14-2012 (12-14-2012, 05:17 PM)Tom22 Wrote: Personally I don't think it is complicated at all why the deal fell appart. It might be simple: Not enough of Haley's product was moving so end of story. On the other hand, there's enough twists and turns to make it an interesting mystery. At least for those of us that like to speculate about such things. While a successful recording company is going to continually be letting go of artists, while signing others, the house cleaning metaphor implies the release of an unusually large number of them (like 65 in a short period). And it is being immediately followed by changes in top management. So maybe Interscope has hit a rough patch and needs to downsize a bit and make other changes. Ultimately, I'm sure that not renewing with Haley reflects a hard nosed business decision. Of course it was. I don't think they were mad at her or feeling she is just too uncooperative. After all they still have a contract with M.I.A. who doesn't listen to Jimmy at all. ![]() Haley was clearly expecting a second single and video during when she spoke last summer, then it moved to a "maybe" and then it was over with Interscope. Perhaps she had A&R people advocating for her but they lost in that effort. I imagine some of them are being swept out of the house, too. But from a business perspective, particularly if you haven't yet recouped costs, I would think that if there was a second single Interscope would have wanted it to be Undone. If Haley were on the cusp of staying versus going from the label's perspective, a difference of opinion on the choice of single could tip the balance. If the artist is not enthusiastic about the song they thought had the best chance of being a hit, then maybe they didn't like the odds. Of course, we don't know what the people of Interscope were thinking but I for one was skeptical about Oh My! doing much as a single. I think Undone could do well if promoted. Love her positive attitude. Funny-I had been surprised that there was nothing official from Interscope on Haley's departure. But that was before I heard about the other 64 acts that were let go.Interscope may be a large company but that's pretty major and it does put things in a new perspective. Her comments about it were typical Haley though-including her mentioning about Real Music Live that "it will be good to be back on the telly".I wonder if she had her British accent for that one. ![]() RE: Haley Reinhart on Interscope Split: "I'll Find Another Great Home" - Babbs234 - 12-14-2012 Quote:Mark Hill, executive producer of Real Music Live, said that Reinhart is exactly the type of artist he was looking for when he envisioned the show -- a production that values entertainers that can “bring it" in a live setting. “She’s a good singer, and she has a sound that is kind of unique,” says Hill, a Chicago drummer who toured with major acts. “I saw her on YouTube and thought, 'Wow.'"I don't mean to change the subject, but wanted to mention isn't it cool that Mark Hill found Haley from you tube videos!! (hint Tusk, Tusk). From that she has a spot on Real Music Live! ![]() I'm sure some label is going to see her and snap her up. Her dad told me that it would take a while, maybe months, but he was sure she would be signed again. He said, "These things take time." Her mom said, "It's all good." I think her parents help contribute to her positive attitude. ![]() RE: Haley Reinhart on Interscope Split: "I'll Find Another Great Home" - buzzenator - 12-14-2012 ^ Right on Babbs...you just knew that the 2 million+ views on a lot of those Idol videos had to have some effect on the industry too, not to mention the Tusk Video Library. ![]() |
