While it is possible to play with longer fingernails (been there, done that), if one is to press the keys the way one should, it is difficult. There is also the little problem of catching nails between the keys, which is a thoroughly unpleasant experience!
As I've mentioned before, I'm so pleased with this development. I have long thought, that given the family that Haley grew up in, that a.) it simply didn't make sense that she didn't seem to play an instrument; and b.) she shouldn't be relying on others to help her write "her songs." Now if she can learn to play well enough that she can get the melodies and chord structures down, she can turn to others for arrangement help, if needed, but she should reap the financial rewards with less "sharing." (Yes, I know -- sharing's a good thing, usually ....)
I think it's great too ...
... to a large degree it's a great thing for anyone! even that bank teller or supermarket bagger! I really gotta start playing that saxaphone next to my bed that's been sitting idle for 30 years!
I think I first stopped because I was self concious about the slight callous I got on my lower lip when I was young and single but... that was a really lame excuse.. mostly lazyness/sloth

Haley doesn't need to be ~good~ at the keyboard for it to be useful ... doesn't even need to be 'fair' or 'competent' ... it is a very low bar of ability level for it to begin to be useful.
Given that she already knows music deeply (understatement much? lol .. she is a musical artist of extreme expressive ability!) even a minor facility of using basic chords with little melody or baselines could be extrodinary. Casey knows all sorts of intruments and all they can do with various lyrical and rhythmic embelishments and expression in themselves...
... yet, Casey also knows when less is more at times - especially in the role of accompaniment
.. CHFIL for example, is a level of piano playing that is more about minimilistic expression and timing of simple chords that could be well within Haley's grasp ... the musicality is already there ... the muscle memory for that sort of playing shouldn't be too huge of a leap for her fingers and mind to make.
Now.. if she were just going to play the piano Without singing .. without her singing giving something to bite into as it dug deep into the soul at times and flittered off into mindful delights..
... without her singing she'd need more piano
But she doesn't need to go there

Learn to play as an adult - piano or guitar?
The consensus seemed to be the guitar if you wanted to be able to play passably in public soon and the piano if you wanted to learn music theory (which could be beneficial later when learning other instruments). The guitar is more portable and more people know how to play it.
From past comments by people who have worked with Haley, she is already well-acquainted with music theory.
So what do you think she'll concentrate on?
I would guess the keyboard since she purchased one earlier. And she has memories of her grandmother playing the piano while the family was gathered around it. Plus, it's more common as a songwriter's tool.

Knowing who her parents are and the community of musicians she's grown up with, would not surprise me at all that she's more advanced at both or either piano and/or guitar than we imagine....
Hard for me to believe that you're a child of Harry Reinhart's and NOT have been taught guitar basics and theory as soon as you're able

Oh, absolutely ..
... whole different level than someone picking deciding to learn an instrument as an adult... and yeah I'm sure she knows more than a few chords on the guitar and could read and play music from intermediate primers at the piano at the very least

I've finally initiated step one to making the Caley Idyllwild Movie, no breaks, by importing the 3 files, two of mine and Ira's 1hr 20minute file. While lining things up, I happened on a part at the beginning where Casey needs Haley to find a note for him on the piano, a G note, he describes it, the 3 black keys... Haley snickers to the crowd, "OK, I know..
""I can play a little, I'm not ready for the big stage..."
So it's possible we won't have to wait too long to see her perform. I expect she's probably better than she thinks, it won't be long 'til she's had enough repetition and better confidence
