Scotty McCreery sings "The First Noel" on CMA Country Christmas - Miguel - 12-02-2011
When Scotty sings something other than country music, it often sounds like a parody to me (because his delivery seems affected compared to his normal speaking voice). When he first began singing this, the image that popped into my mind was Cletus from The Simpsons singing the song as part of a Simpsons Christmas special.

Lauren performed at the same show, but didn't have an exaggerated country accent (her performance starts at about 3:15 mark):

Cletus the slack-jawed yokel. LOL. Nice graphic.

Singing this song with a deep voice is fine but employing a strong country accent makes it more like a novelty act. It's a choice he made and he could have made another choice (Melanie Amaro didn't sing Earth Song with a Caribbean accent). If Haley were to toss in some growls while singing "The First Noel" I would say the same thing.

Yeah, I didn't watch much of it. I think he would fit right in on the old Hee-Haw show. (I could envision him popping up in the cornfield joke segment of the show.) [Click twice]
For Haley, the Smother's Brothers would have been a good fit.

“My first award and it’s a dad-gum Telecaster,” the ‘American Idol’ winner said before thanking fans and his management team.
Scotty is very professional up on the stage and amazingly comfortable interacting with the audience. By the time he's 20 he'll be a seasoned performer.

Wow, here I am with back to back posts about Scotty.
Quote:Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery landed on Television Without Pity/Yahoo!’s “The Very Worst Reality Stars of 2011″ list. The website had this to say about Scotty:
We wanted to smack his smug face throughout most of the season. But he really earned his spot on this list by exploiting the nation’s painful memories of 9/11 for his own personal gain a week after Osama bin Laden was killed. We can only pray his career doesn’t last nearly as long as Carrie Underwood’s.
