RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - mercfan3 - 10-22-2014 This is such wonderful news. So if ole has the rights to al of haleys songs, does that mean they bought the listen up songs from interscope? Also, I wonder what "provide support for a new ep means" are they going to be distributing it? Promoting it? Findin someone who will? I mean, I assume they are financing the production. I've always loved ole. RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! I think I read it implied a "shared distribution" of her early catalogue http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/-1960065.htm Quote: Under the new agreement, ole will gain worldwide co-publishing rights to Reinhart's existing catalog and future compositions. New EP! - My Alter Ego - 10-22-2014 Earlier this afternoon, I'm reasonably certain ("reasonably" being about 99.999% certain) that I saw a message to the effect that "it was hoped that Haley had her legal team working on this." (I'm quite certain that I didn't hallucinate that.) I agree with that sentiment. Given the nature of what I deal with at work, my antenna goes up when I see something like: Quote:Lately, we’ve adopted the business nomenclature of Rights Management, seeing ourselves operating in a broader rights management role. In that direction we have a direct deal with YouTube and are managing assets on behalf of clients in the master and audio visual realms. We are also in the secondary rights business, audio visual retransmission and I see us getting into neighboring rights in the near future. Music publishers have a natural ability to manage complex rights environments and data sets so it is our role to extend the scope of our rights management activities. I get a little concerned when I see phrases such as "our rights" unless the creators of the IP (not sure that's the correct nomenclature here, but what I see regularly) are included in that 3 letter word "our." Mercfan, any light that you might be able to shed here?? In addition to my concern that the music writers (it's so hard to say that rather than composer) be compensated well for their efforts, I also hope that the retired Ontario teachers have found this to be a "comfortable" arrangement. RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - Miguel - 10-22-2014 I found this about indie labels and co-publishing rights: Quote:...many indie deals will include a clause giving the indie publishing or co-publishing rights. Publishing simply means licensing the songs (the compositions/lyrics) themselves (not the recordings – this is separate and the subject of another article) and administering those licenses, which means collecting the licensing fees, doing all the paperwork, and paying the artist his or her share. A publishing deal normally grants the publisher the copyrights in the songs in exchange for 50% of whatever income that publisher receives from licensing the longs. More common today are co-publishing deals, where the artist and the publisher co-own the copyrights and the artist receives 75% of all income received. So she may have gained a greater percentage in exchange for granting rights to future works. If they're vested in her producing new material, that's a good thing. There's a good chance they did given their primary focus seems to be acquiring rights to music. They possibly paid $25 million back in May to acquire the catalog of the band Rush. http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/publishing/6099385/ole-acquires-rush-catalog RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! Well, this makes me feel more comfortable regarding the situation. However, in Haley's case, currently she's always having to share that 75%. She needs to learn either piano or guitar well enough that she can write on her own -- fingernails be damned (just like hair, they grow back). That's just too shallow to be a justifiable -- and, ultimately, rational excuse. (Yes, I know, I'm taking up the role of "resident crank" again.) RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - midnightblues - 10-22-2014 IMO a piano is a better choice to wright music with, but a guitar is easier to learn. 3 basic bar cords and you can do a lot of rock songs or whatever RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - Himm2 - 10-22-2014 From what I've heard there were negotiations with a couple labels that were no where near as fair to Haley as what this most likely is. Midnight, I'd agree that the piano would be a better choice -- and I go back to my "Carol King" comment from sometime early to mid-last year. Define "resident crank" -- well, in the case of Haley, on occasion I've been known to stick my neck out and state things that are likely viewed as "criticism" -- at least here, they are. I don't do it often -- but it's "out there." And, well, most of Haleyfans don't seem to understand that I can see these things and still appreciate her and want to support her. (And if blind allegiance is what "being a fan" is about, I suppose they are correct -- I can't do that. But does "blind allegiance" really help her?) In the case of Haley not knowing how to play piano or guitar -- particularly guitar, given the family she grew up in -- is ... is ... Well, I don't dare say what I truly think, but using fingernails as an excuse simply doesn't work for me. And given that you are a musician (of sorts) too, I would hope that you "get it" as well. But if you do, Midnight, we are a minority. And I say unpopular things on occasion. Thus, I'm the "resident crank." |
