RE: American Idol 2014 - kaypea - 04-10-2014 (04-10-2014, 09:06 AM)lauraliz Wrote: I haven't written too much this year. It's been pretty boring. I decided to watch last night after skipping a couple of shows I like Harry but I think at this point that he's trying too hard with the goofy stuff.Maybe he feels the show needs it to perk things up.Totally agreed on Jessica. To me she's kind of an enigma. She's been doing this for a living and up until now she must have been doing alot of stuff where she doesn't move around much or make much of an attempt at being a performer. Her voice sounds assured-to me ,more than any of the others- but when it comes to visually putting the song over its just not there and she doesn't seem to be improving. As for the others Alex has a distinctive voice but he's not a performer either and I didn't think his arrangement of that song worked at all. There's really nobody else that interests me and I fast forwarded through the rest of it. RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 04-10-2014 Jessica is used to having her guitar up on stage with her. She's like Sam and Alex and Dexter and CJ in that..she needs her instrument. But she's a girl, so she's the only one called out on it. I loved her vocal on "Call Me" (It's not Haley's..but I just don't compare her versions to any one elses..). The Choreography was exactly the same..but Jessica is just uncomfortable on stage. She knows who she is as an artist. And as much as I'm all for these kids expanding themselves..at least she's got some sort of stage presence with her instrument and doing her own thing..so let her do it. The show needs her to be good, because there are so few actual good ones. Other than that, Jena's growing on me. Caleb is very good..but I think he's overrated because of the rest of the group. Alex is the best WGWG on one of these shows..ever. Sings in tune..has a decent range..and is actually creative (not just turning everything into a John Mayor song/covers from youtube.) So I'm okay with him. MK's still my favorite despite being eliminated. Which probably says more about this season than her. RE: American Idol 2014 - Miguel - 04-10-2014 Sam lives to emote sing another day. RE: American Idol 2014 - NUG - 04-16-2014 So, Jessica is singing Gunpowder and Lead this week (chosen for her by another contestant), making this the 5th song also covered by Haley, sung this season, and the 3rd song she herself has sung which was also covered by Haley. Still not a huge Jessica fan, but I think this will be a good song for her. RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 04-16-2014 I hope she stays at the guitar. She just looks clueless without it, and this song really needs her to be a force. Excited about Jena's song. I've been warming up to her lately. I like Alex's pick too..but it's about time someone called him out on always needing the guitar (like they do to the ladies) and always singing the same tempo.. RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-17-2014 So, Dexter's out. I wasn't surprised that Jessica joined him in the bottom two. I really like her voice but she has yet to deliver anything really special. And the judges seem to have her singled out for the "pretty girl to pick on" slot -- she gets no breaks. Now she has to deliver, or else. I'd say 4th place is best case for Jess. CJ's and Sam's days are numbered, which leaves Jena, Caleb and Alex as top three. Jena will probably win. RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-18-2014 From Lindsey Parker Quote:... https://music.yahoo.com/blogs/reality-rocks/-american-idol--top-7-results--not-a-meused-015749829.html?soc_src=mediacontentsharebuttons I wouldn't carry the Haley comparison too far. Jessica hasn't risen to "have a moment" (although her original song was quite good I thought) and many of her supporters have been disappointed. Speaking of "moments," JLo declared that Jena and Caleb had one during there duet. But I don't think it works that way. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-18-2014 I'm really getting tired of the Jess/Haley comparison..... It's a fixation on the wrong aspect of Haley's time on AI It's like the phrase "Getting the Haley Reinhart treatment" is now a convenient excuse to not even try.... because of the 'unfair' judging. What made Haley's story on Season 10 compelling is that the more she was criticized, the more she upped her game, the more they upped their criticism, the more she 'brought it'. It was a ramping up of efforts from Both sides. Haley did not merely, basically, do the same thing week after week, 'poor me, I'm being wrongly criticized'.... Haley counterpunched, so to speak, with an even stronger performance in response to the criticism. Jessica has yet to show that she can fight back. There is no connection AT ALL in her performances. In Jessica's case, she hasn't 'upped her game', comes with the same, 'look into the camera and smile' visage, week after week. On top of that, her vocals are not that strong as to compensate for what she lacks in stage presence. I'm not a Jessica hater, in fact, she was one of my picks early in the season. I would love for her to show improvement every week..... She has not .... To compare what's occuring for Jessica is to devalue Haley's. Their responses to 'harsh criticism' isn't anywhere the same. Haley fought back....Jessica just looks into the camera with the same practiced smile, regardless of the song, the rhythm or the subject matter ![]() An early Jessica critique ( I think by Keith ), which I think is apt is, Jessica still sings like she's singing in a bar where people don't really pay attention to the performer...... RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-18-2014 We shall see what happens. Unlike Haley she had never been in the bottom three (or bottom two as the show has been identifying since they saved Sam -- I assume he has been #3 both weeks). She has now had her wake up call with the audience and it is her time to shine, or not. ETA: Tusk, I agree she hasn't shown that "growth arc" on the show. Unlike some of the younger contestants who should have waited a couple more years to go on AI, she may have the opposite problem. She may have found a style of performing on her own that is now difficult to change. Or she just hit her ceiling. I think she is capable of more but we may not see it. I do agree with the critics, however, that she has been getting the negative treatment from the judges and/or producers. When Sam, on the other hand, comes out looking emotional sterile they save him and then surround him by swaybots the next week to show that he is -- really is -- a heartthrob. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-18-2014 It seems to me (seeing some of her tweets in response to this comparison) she has been emboldened by this comparison, like I said, an excuse to stay the course, so I don't expect much more than the same types of performances she's been doing I don't think her end game is to be THE "American Idol", to win the game. I think she just wants to get a fan base and put out an album, and do what she's been doing .... It just saddens me that since S10, the "Reinhart Treatment" applied to underwhelming performers (Amber, Jessica M) really takes the heart out of what it really means, to overcome and shine despite adversity Edit: I will say, the only time I thought the comparison of over criticism, of coming back with stronger performances, was Elise Testone. Her's was the closest in that regard, to Haley's journey |
