But she ain't no Haley. Haley leaned into the trash the judges were throwing her way and blew it away. People are hoping to see a contestant respond similarly, but it doesn't happen very often. What Haley did was extraordinary and her story is much more than one of simply getting bused. ETA: Just saw that response from Jess that Miguel posted. Stick a fork in her I'm afraid. The strike out is also an edit. RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-18-2014 exactly, Haley fought back.... the 'emboldened' remark is a poor descriptor of what I mean. She appears to be listening (and agreeing, as Miguel has illustrated) to these comparisons from her base, and getting the wrong message, that is, "you're doing fine, it's not that you're not improving, it's because the judges are unfairly judging you".... That's why I expect more of the same. I would love Jessica to blow the doors off the hinges and knock my socks off, eat my words. But we're a month away from the finale. She hasn't shown she's capable of doing that at any time since the auditions Jessica will wake to a harsh reality once her time on Idol is over and a large percentage of her "Idol" fan base moves onto the next season/reality singing competition.... Perhaps what she's shown with her song writing will be enough to get her traction, but I really don't see her getting signed. If she does put out an album, it will be she who does it, not a label :p RE: American Idol 2014 - Miguel - 04-18-2014 (04-18-2014, 10:44 AM)Tusk Wrote: I'm really getting tired of the Jess/Haley comparison..... Good comment. Debra Byrd: Quote:It’s tough, especially when there are four [contestants], and you sing your face off, and you’re the one that’s told, “Ehh, everybody was great except you.” Her skin is getting tougher, and I have to say we have a lot of talks about this. It’s a learning process for her as it would be for anyone who’s going through that kind of thing. It’s not like she folds and crumbles. It becomes a fighter’s mentality and I applaud her for it. Because you either do that or you die. Those are your choices. And she has no plans of dying on the vine. Harry Reinhart: Quote:I always knew she was a toughie, but I didn't know she was this tough. . Sourced from MJ's: Quote: Food for Tweet @FoodforTweet Quote: Jess Meuse ✔ @JessMeuse Quote: ♥️K♥️Elisabeth @lexadream Quote: Jess Meuse ✔ @JessMeuse Reading between the lines, one can imagine Jessica doesn't respect JLO. Taking it a step further, JLO has picked up on this and doesn't like Jessica as a result. That in turn has influenced the other judges. RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 04-18-2014 Jess took Kenny's bait bigtime. She needs to GET OFF twitter. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 04-18-2014 No comment..... ![]() (except for that one ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - kaypea - 04-18-2014 (04-10-2014, 03:24 PM)mercfan3 Wrote: Jessica is used to having her guitar up on stage with her. She's like Sam and Alex and Dexter and CJ in that..she needs her instrument. But she's a girl, so she's the only one called out on it. I think this is the best analysis of Jessica's experience on Idol. Its obvious by now that she's not comfortable out there just strutting her stuff or whatever you want to call it.The shame of it is that she has been doing her own thing for awhile and she does know what's best for her. So the question is why didn't she perform with the guitar more-just because she's a woman? CJ stands there just about every week with his guitar and nobody ever tells him not to. And where is her "mentor" or a realization from the judges on this.So its obvious that nobody else even realizes what's best for her which is a pretty sad commentary,I, think. And Harry's advice for her?-go put on some rap music and stand in front of the mirror like that's gonna help her. But I do have the same kind of disdain for the judges' treatment of her that I did with Haley even if it doesn't approach the intensity it did with Haley. RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 04-18-2014 See, I think "the Reinhart treatment" has been mislabeled. If anyone got it in season 11, it was Jessica Sanchez..and she did fight back. But it was much much more subtle. (The slutshaming followed by Jessica performing "steal away" was one of the best middle finger responses to Idol judges/producers/jimmy that I've seen on this show.) No one in season 12 got it. The Reinhart Treatment to me, is a form of bussing where the judges/producers try to convince the audience that a certain contestant doesn't belong..even though it's not the case. The bussing for no reason. I thought Jessica was subpar last night. And I would have no problem with the judges comments..if they hadn't of praised everyone else to the highest degree. (When only Jena deserved it.) Because everyone was subpar.(theme of the season..) And then the only song choice of the night they picked on was the one Jess chose for Sam. (Which, quite frankly, was probably the best pick for anyone that night. I mean..Caleb gave Jena "Creep" because Jena told Caleb to give her "Creep." ) And then she sang in the group..and the judges said the group was terrible, but Dexter and CJ sounded great. And then they showed all the negative material they had on camera..even editing some of it..(Like seeing Malaya cry while Jessica says "It's a competition" in voice over..) They went really really hard on her. The treatment itself was as bad as one of Haley's nights. (They've been consistently harder on Jessica than is negative, but not to the extent it was for Haley.) It didn't anger me to the extent that it angered me with Haley because..Jessica isn't as good as Haley..I don't like Jessica as much as I like Haley..and I don't think Jessica is dominating everyone else like Haley was.. (That being said..she's still solidly 3rd/4th) I don't know if she'll get better. But I will say, she did have every reason to ignore the judges because previously, no matter what they said..she hadn't been in the bottom three. So now that she has been, we'll see if she's got a fighter mentality. But I also think she needs to go back to who she is as an artist. Take the guitar out, sing her style of songs..get into the music...(She needs help there..good god Randy is useless..) Stop trying to be something she's not...no one else is forced to do that...so she should just try and be the best her. (Also, stop letting the fashion department dress her. They've come up with some ugly things..) RE: American Idol 2014 - My Alter Ego - 04-18-2014 Quote:Harry's advice for her?-go put on some rap music and stand in front of the mirror like that's gonna help her. kaypea, I usually agree with you, but this time we'll have "agree to disagree." I think you're missing the point -- and, most are. Tom22 is getting it, but struggling to articulate it. Harry's comment this week was actually nothing but an extension of his comment last week regarding "the shuffle." When you connect both comments and you know music, (which I know you do, kaypea), I'm reasonably certain that what Harry's trying to help Jessica get/internalize is the "full" rhythmic sense: not just the main beat (1-2-3- 4) but the sub-pulses, and the sub, sub pulses, etc. (Because Harry's just such a jerk that he's still trying to help these kids in the limited way that he can.) If she would work on and internalize those parts of the rhythm, it would likely display itself in her performances: she'd be looser (hopefully) in her movement across the stage -- and, no, merely ambling around a stage is not choreography! And she might perform/sing more freely, as well, which is what Harry's hoping for, I suspect/believe/think. But after several weeks of what's considered "Jessica bashing," because "some" have decided she's this season's Haley, at this point I largely start agreeing with Tusk and John. It's true that we've seen little, if any, growth arc in her -- and this is unfortunate because, from the audition, she seemed to have been one who could benefit the most from this experience. It's also true that she has, at least superficially, attempted to do what the judges have suggested she do to improve. (I think "superficially" is the operative word here.) Because, from her audition, I've had this underlying "something" that I couldn't quite put my finger on, I am, unfortunately, not surprised at her attitude. In last week's Reality Check (I think), Melinda had expressed her: a.) concern; b.) befuddlement; c.) dismay (dismay? Melinda -- no, it can't be!) regarding the remaining contestants approach/attitude. To me, there has been a very low-key/understated sense of entitlement in Jessica since the live shows began, or shortly thereafter. That's my perception, and it's ONLY MY PERCEPTION. But in having just read her bio in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Meuse), it's not as though she's a self-trained musician, so I truly struggle to understand many elements of her performance issues. (And I am an extraordinarily strong introvert and have been acutely shy as well. I've also been involved with music from an early age -- singing since I don't remember when [until I purposely quit] and beginning trumpet when I was nine.) Initially, all I wanted for Jessica was that she would remain in the competition long enough to develop a fan base who would sustain her post-Idol (and I don't like what Jessica does "musically".) Hopefully, she's obtained that, because, at this point, it might be to her benefit that she doesn't stay too much longer -- for everyone's sake. RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 04-18-2014 Harry has come off terribly as a judge, IMO. But I still say he would have been extremely helpful as a mentor..particularly to this set. I agree that learning to internalize rhythm might help Jessica. My issue is..and always has been..the difference in treatment. Is Jessica uncomfortable on stage? Yes. Absolutely. Can she at times lack energy? Definitely. Has she failed to have a growth arc? Certainly. But other than Jena, what other contestant can say that they've done those three things? So sure, call Jessica out on that stuff. But call CJ, Dexter, Alex, Sam, and Caleb out on it too. I don't think anyone says she's getting the Reinhart edit if that's the case. But I think with her being the only contestant that consistently gets negative critiques (When she's rarely, if ever, the worst performer that night) combined with the producers going after her. I guess it goes back to..it's just not fair that Idol does that to these kids. Jessica Meuse doesn't deserve to essentially be bullied on national television. Neither did Jessica Sanchez, or Haley Reinhart, or Allison Iraheta, or Carly Smithson and Syesha etc..) Quite frankly, I do think that's part of the reason that The Voice is winning the battle of the Karaoke shows. I know there are plenty of people who just don't like watching that any longer. |
