RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 05-02-2014 Sam got voted off and rightfully so. The producers tried their best to hammer a square peg into a round hole with Sam and failed. A nice young man but a middle of the pack contestant who was clearly uncomfortable with many of the producer's efforts to make him into a heartthrob. That just isn't him. It was a painful process in recent weeks that made for some bad TV and, in my mind did more damage to the Idol brand. This week they tried to save Sam a second time under the guise of a "gift" to the contestants that allowed them to vote to invalidate the public's votes. If successful, Sam would never have been identified as the low vote getter. Fortunately the vote failed. It is hard for me to get excited about any of the top 4. I really like Jena's energy and ability to perform on the stage -- but I don't like her voice. Caleb is too one dimensional. The first song this week showed some of his limitations as a vocalist. I enjoy Alex and he has a lot of talent, but it's the same look, the same stance, and the same sound week after week. He is the king of keeping it small. Which leaves Jessica. I really like her voice and she is capable of doing a lot with it. But it often seems constrained, even when she is belting out a lyric. I keep waiting for her to wow me by letting it all go, but I doubt that will happen. RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 05-02-2014 Before this week's reveal, there had been talk that the producers were protecting Sam in other ways. I haven't watched, maybe the last three, four weeks, not even the performance clips, so I don't know....but apparently, they've been only revealing the 'bottom two' instead of the normal, bottom three. The conjecture had been that Sam has been a 'near bottom dweller' for those weeks thus why they would only reveal the bottom two to sustain the general perception that he was a front runner when in fact his actual status was anything but ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 05-02-2014 (05-02-2014, 12:15 PM)Tusk Wrote: Before this week's reveal, there had been talk that the producers were protecting Sam in other ways. I think that is true -- following the save they switched to a bottom two reveal. I have little doubt that Sam was #3 each those weeks. The have also immersed him in teenage female swaybots repeatedly, which makes him look very uncomfortable. Wednesday night they "surprised" him by bringing on Ariana Grande, whom he has admitted crushing on, and that just made for an awkward moment before his performance. ![]() Quote: Jess MeuseVerified account Quote:Alex Preston @RealAlexPreston 16h Quote:Sam Woolf @samwoolfmusic 12h Quote:So, yes… it was back to business as usual, and Sam went home in fifth place. Ha. But Ryan never revealed who else was in the bottom two this week. So there was probably another reason for this stupid historical twist: It might have been a very popular contestant that the show's powers-that-be didn't want tainted by the stink of a surprise bottom-two showing. Could it have been Jena Irene? Alex Preston? Caleb Johnson? All I can assume is, it wasn't Jessica. Quote:Pop Music Stuff @popmusicstuff 22m RE: American Idol 2014 - Tusk - 05-02-2014 The interesting fallout might be what all the upset Sam fans will do... Since it was revealed that the most 'consistent' Idols, Jena and Alex, were the 'no' votes (the vote had to be unanimous to not eliminate, or 5 'yes' votes, for it to work), I wonder if the backlash, might mean the Sam voters put their efforts behind anyone BUT Jena or Alex. This might mean Jess get's to continue being compared to Haley in that the 'outrage' may sneak her into 3rd place, and a formerly 'front runner', like Alex, (or James in Haley's season) get's knocked down to 4th ![]() Caleb would be an ironic, but cosmically apt since he's a friend of and similar to James, elimination at 4th too ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 05-02-2014 The "twist" RE: American Idol 2014 - mercfan3 - 05-02-2014 Actually, I find it really interesting that Jena and Alex chose to vote no. Jessica should have thought she was in all likelihood safe. She was, far and away, the best performer of the night..and Idol this season, had been rewarding the best performances. Although, I imagine she voted yes, because she's aware of people's perception of her. (Because she's gotten "the bitch" edit.) Caleb, also should have figured he was safe. He's a favorite. He performed last. And even if he's a bit one note, he did it well.. Jena and Alex though..if Sam wasn't going home, it was going to be one of them. (And I thought Jena was good..but hadn't been as good as she was.) That all being said, these four were the best this season had to offer. With better mentoring, I think MK, Sam, Emily, and Kristen all could have gotten better and competed with them. But really, Jena's the only contestant that did get better..and it's because she's the only contestant that really had that personality type. I thought Jessica should have thought she was safe but for a different reason. Given the way she has been treated on the show, if she were lowest vote getter I would assume they'd just let her be voted off. This little stunt has been successful in generating some buzz about the show. The contestants did not like it and I don't blame them. The producers may have introduced some new factors into the voting since the two "no" votes are known to be Jena and Alex. Jena could take over the "bitch" slot --- the hyper-competitive mean girl. I doubt it affects Alex much, for him, it's more likely to be perceived as integrity. ![]() BTW, one of Slezak's song suggestions (breakup and makeup theme) for Jena is Oh My! That could be perceived as cold blooded towards his 'friend', Sam. You know there are irrational people like this out there who like to envision slights ![]() Like this one from TVLine: Quote:Next week, my votes would have gone to Alex. But he looked like the other “no” vote. He and Jena screwed over their “friends.” Not something I want to support. They should have been confident enough in themselves and their performances/rankings to not purposely step on other people. Every week Jena says how close they all are and how she doesn’t want anyone to go home. Looks like those sentiments were completely fake and false. She would’ve been fine regardless as would (likely “no” voter) Alex. ![]() RE: American Idol 2014 - john - 05-02-2014 ^ Indeed, Alex could suffer. I think Jena gets the worst of it though. Last year, they started with the Bottom 2 at Top 7 week as well (and stayed with it) -- and there was no save last year. (Also, at that point they were desperately trying to get rid of Lazaro!) Someone on the TVLine board said that there was an earlier year when that happened as well. And, yes, those posting on the TVLine message board certainly have gone "over board" with their "conspiracy theories" regarding this incident. They've been, as a whole, pretty crazed throughout the season, but last night/today really seems more OTT than usual. I thought "the twist" was that TPTB were taking a page out of the Survivors notebook. After all, AI's ratings are declining while Survivors' s rising ![]() |
