I also liked the clips above.

I hope the rock lovers stayed with Grace 's video long enough (more than 60 seconds in. to see her take off at 90 seconds in... recording quality improves a bit by then and the whole feel changes after the introduction.. you definitely need to like LIVE music .. I expect performers to perform a fair bit differently live than in studio

--- Think if Harry (her dad) was there with Haley in the top one ! .... his natural blues drive would have helped courtney and keith to go there.. and maybe dad would even teach them a thing or two stretching them that way. And. it looks like Haley was in the mood to sing that sort of blues her dad plays and the guys weren't just quite expecting it that day with that song ?

... MAE I had some thoughts on the Dixieland Irvin Mayfield post I made.. .. I started writing an essay or two to share my thoughts there.. that would be meaningful at least in my book

a short version might appy here: .. I've got some thoughts i'm not sure how to express about the reliance a great performance by one band member relies a good deal on the foundation the performers set. Not just the accompanyment but the state of mind they've put the audience in an the themes that they've raised that get closed and elaborated on by a following performer.
... vaguely, I also have some the notion of "characters" in a play.. they're not a series of divers at the Olympics but a mix of flavors ... some with bravado, some with precision.. cant have a Romeo without a Mercutio and a Tybalt.

What I noticed in the Josh Gooch / john notto video Midnight linked?

in both Notto tape and another one with Gooch and a band in Bangkok member playing classic blues "the thrill is gone" he's so keen on lifting the whole band's performance ..

.... ... he really seems like a guy who wanted to share and encourage the other band members.. and he must have a manner of suggestion that let other band members take it in the best light (like a qb in a huddle) took whatever brief thoughts he shared to lift/adjust their game.. not imitating him but being their self a little better self. And. the smile on his face enjoying their performances was wonderfully generous...

.. a lot to read into a couple videos I know -- I have an imagination lol

I think my point was all along. (as you grasped).. wasnt' to become a different kind of singer

.. but sharpening other arrows in a quiver.. and Having a BLAST doing it! Its not about one particular person but just an approach and maybe a mindset.

With Haley's busy schedule.. I hope she still finds hours a week to just chill .. maybe have a beer and just play/sing for hours with good musician FRIENDS (that intense creative writing in greece was amazing I'm sure.. but hanging out and making music without an audience necessarily there has it's place too.. on top of the big and small performances which all add in their own way).

But. I don't want to sound like I'm giving advice. SHE and her MOM and DAD know so much more about what makes a musician that I do. ... although, I guess I could say I think it would be fun .

I liked that girl singing you linked.. she had a nice style.. I listened to a number of things on youtube and liked them but wasn't quite relaxed enough to let them soak in fully.. I'll get to them again .. i didn't ignore the thoughts!

Hey Tom - I meant to reply to your post earlier than this, I just haven't had enough time, the past couple of days, to write much of a reply.

Glad you liked the Grace Potter tune. That new single is one of my favorite new songs right now. It has great energy, part of that is the guitar riff, but also it's just a well written song. There are parts that melody & Grace's vocal that I absolutely love. "Stars" was a big hit for them but now that they've reached this level of fame, I hope that "The Lion The Beast The Beat" will be even bigger, cause IMO it's just a flat out better song.

Glad you liked ZZ as well. ZZ & Haley are really my favorite two new artists. One thing I've mentioned before is they know a number of the same people... Rob Kleiner, Chiara Kramer, Mike Daley, BJ Olin & Allen Stone. ZZ & Allen are both very much a part of the alt. rock community (especially the bluesier end). Both of them know a lot of the other artists on the rock festival circuit, who get varying amounts of airplay on either Alt Rock or AAA radio. That's a community I'm hoping Haley's able to work her way into more & more.

I watched "The Thrill is Gone" vid w/ Josh Gooch & Jack Thammerat I liked that a lot better because, well it's a good song to begin w/ so there's a lot more there to work w/ in the first place. I thought both of them did a good job w/ the song, have a good feel for the blues and there were alot of cool bluesy phrases that each of them played. Here's the thing though, in addition to them both being good blues players, they're both also very good, highly trained shredders. They don't over do it or anything, but it's there. Not that there's anything wrong w/ that necessarily, but shredding is a style who's origins lie in metal & it's indicative of that style of music, so when you add that in you've got a metal/blues mix.

Going back to Haley... and TBH Tom I'm not sure you're even suggesting that Josh would be a good addition to Haley's band... but metal isn't one of the genres present in Haley's style, so IDK I just don't think it quite fits w/ what she's doing. And I know she has said that her dad can "Shred pretty good" but Harry doesn't really shred, he can play fast but he doesn't use shred techniques, like I doubt you're going hear him play any sweep arpeggios.

IMO the type of guitar player that would be perfect for Haley's band would be an exceptionally expressive player (like Dave Gilmour from Floyd) but w/ more focus on blues, who also likes to incorporate some jazz chords in the music (like Corrinne Bailey Rae) and uses a variety of classic rock & blues guitar tones (BB King's tone, Hendrix's "Red House" tone, Gilmour's "Another Brick in the Wall solo tone" those kinds of sounds). Who that would be I don't know, but to quote Casey Abrams "A boy can dream".

This comment just prompted me to get a lesson in what "sweep arpeggios" are:

An interview with the "boyz" last month about a charity event they had put together:
https://soundcloud.com/level-entertainment-group/jackie-boyz-interview

In it they describe how they moved to LA and were singing in the streets. Miley Cyrus heard them a few years ago and told them they sounded like Chris Brown and that she wanted to get them in a studio. She was true to her word and two days later they were recording with her.

The event features up-and-coming artists who are their friends. The interviewer notes that none of the acts uses a backing track or auto-tune and they play real instruments. The "boyz" say each act will each perform a cover so you can see where they are coming from and then a new song.

At the 10:55 mark, the interviewer asks them to perform a song and he says they will do "Stand by Me," which they used to perform in the streets.

The interviewer asks if they're going to hear some of that at the event.

The talkative one of the "boyz" replies:

You're gonna see a mashup of some old with some new. We have this sound we developed called "Progressive Soul. It's a mixture of soul music with today's sound of modern EDM, modern trap, a lot of different sounds..

Wikipedia:
Quote: Trap music is a music genre that originated in the early 2000s from Southern hip hop and crunk in the Southern United States.[1][2] It is typified by its lyrical content and trademark sound, which incorporates 808 sub-bass kick drums, sped-up hi-hats, layered synthesizers, and "cinematic" strings.[3][4]

In 2012, a new movement of electronic music producers and DJs emerged who began incorporating elements of trap music into their works. This helped expand its popularity among electronic music fans. A number of stylistic offshoots of trap developed, which in the latter half of 2012 gained a rise in viral popularity and made a noticeable impact on dance music.
