RE: American Idol 2013 - Outcast - 02-06-2013
Hung benefitted from Idol's much higher profile and popularity back in those days and the fact that he was the first (I think) "joke act" of the show, pretty much what Himm2 said. It's a totally different scenario now.

Here is what williamhung.net has to say about his success (http://www.williamhung.net/):
Quote:What appeals to fans is his unusual looks, good attitude, naiveness and eagerness. His image has not been manufactured or carefully crafted, thus he brings a fresh face and personality to the celebrity culture.
He seems to have the appeal of a novelty act.

Almost everyone has been booed off stage, if he's one of the few artists who've never been booed that just means he doesn't perform that much.

Thats why William Hung thrived and prospered. Himm, I hadn't thought of this in that way. You are right. And to MAE and anyone I may have offended,, I'm sorry for my thoughtless comments. Babbs, you didn't offend me at all. The point that I attempted to make (but obviously missed), was that I think that there is a point wherein it's better to be more direct/honest and let this person know what he actually sounds like. Simon Cowell did that rather routinely until the last year (or maybe two) on AI.
Himm2 and Outcast probably have correctly perceived the reasons that William Hung "hung on" for as long as he did, although, according to his Wiki bio, it also might be that he wasn't arrogant and his attitude ("living his dream") was deemed to be inspirational. No matter what, it is bizarre.

Jennifer Hudson: 'American Idol' Should End While On Top
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/22/jennifer-hudson-american-idol-end_n_2525471.html?utm_hp_ref=american-idol
Quote:"'American Idol' changed the face of television,” she said. “So, not everyone can say that. And, it’s always been a phenomenon. I’m proud to have come from 'American Idol,' so I just say, go out on top."
Quote:Hudson isn't the only former "Idol" contestant who has spoken out about the series recently. Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken said the show focuses too much on who the judges are -- new judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey's interaction and subsequent feud have been plastered on headlines left and right -- and not the talent who are looking for their shot to make it big.
"Kelly [Clarkson] and Justin [Guarini] and Tamyra [Gray] and Nikki McKibbin, they were all the stars of the show," Aiken said. "And when I was on, Ruben [Studdard] and myself and Kimberly Locke were the stars of the show. Now 'Idol' is about the judges. I don't even know if they remember there are contestants anymore."

Your comments are never thoughtless or offensive Babbs. I too scratched my head in disbelief of Hung's success but merely was analyzing why.
RE: American Idol 2013 - Haleylvr4evr - 02-06-2013
Does anyone know what song Haley did for her group round? She forgot the words and just said "doesnt matter whoooh oooaaooaa" I cant find an actual video besides the few seconds before "god bless the child"
Apparently it was "carry on my wayward son" but I still cant find video
RE: American Idol 2013 - Himm2 - 02-06-2013
The group round she did fabulous at was with Naima Adedapo & Jacob Lusk singing:
"The Long & Winding Road"
the skin of her teeth was with Paul McDonald:
followed by the great redemption of "God Bless the Child"...that also got her to Carnegie Hall!
RE: American Idol 2013 - Tom22 - 02-07-2013
Man, the idol show tonight was the most god -awful mess i've ever seen.
I must have a whole different understanding of what the groove to gospel and blues is supposed to be because the runs the guys were doing to that Lazy song sucked ...no swing to them...plainest resolves you could have .. idk
The call response thing also had none of the play with time I'd expect.. just a mushy thing with no hint of .. damn I can't even describe it.
...and that was by far one of the best performances of the show and it was blah...
I hope the editor just didn't understand music and they left the good parts on the cutting room floor and we got to see the bad parts.
