RE: Haley's Vocal Range - Babbs234 - 05-03-2013
^^ Mercfan, this is all very interesting to me. I don't know anything about range, vocal limits, and different keys to sing in. But I feel like I'm learning a little here. Thank you for your explanation!

Mercfan-its the same way with the saxophone family-they all overlap and in certain registers the average listenner has a hard time identifying-say an alto or tenor.Also-the soprano sax isn't isn't really a soprano-there are now two saxes that play higher-one of them an octave higher which is so tiny I don't know how anyone can actually play it so the soprano really could be called a mezzo soprano.
To make it more confusing by using fingerings that were never designed for the horn originally and making adjustments with your embrochure a good player-particular on the tenor-can produce notes that are far above what the original was intended for. Some tenor players can play two octaves above the intended range of the horn.-sometimes even higher.(similar to what you'd call whistle tones with a singer)If anyone has ever watched Saturday Night Live and heard a sax playing that is up in the stratosphere that's a tenor sax.

Nice. I always loved the saxophone. I played the flute, and although I enjoyed it, I always enjoyed the fuller sound of horn instruments.
One of the things that always struck me with Haley's voice, is she a lot of times sounds like a classic singer (Ella etc..) because her voice can sometimes actually mimic the sounds of instruments. It's partially the reason why her scatting sounds so authentic.
The dynamics of Haley's voice are just so...unique. I'm not going to say she's technically the best singer idol has ever had. Although I think there's an argument, there are definitely singers with just as good of an argument. But her voice is just so special and can do so many things. Her vocal control is out of this world and what she chooses to do, impulsively, is so often spot on.
From the time I was about 4 until I heard Haley sing, there wasn't a voice I loved more than Mariah Carey's. I doubt anyone is going to beat Haley.

Her dynamics-and her tone(tones) are unique. And she just has natural insincts that you don't hear very often-especially on these singing shows. When she's putting her own spin on the melody for instance the notes always seem to fit-and so many of these singers just don't have that.
Regarding her lower register I think that she's learned to work with it better and at this point has more confidence with it since she left Idol. Its got its own character which is quite different from the amazing clarity she can have in her comfort zone.Maybe doing all the duo gigs has helped.

Also on the AI tour. She knew what she was doing when she volunteered for all the back up duties during the Idol tour. She took every piece of experience the opportunity afforded her and had to have gained much as a vocalist and performer. (Also, her versatility allowed her to excel as a back up vocalist for anybody)
She's really impressive how adjusted she is constantly learning and still being able to goof off with friends.
When people are focused, generally, it means one has precedence at the cost of the other. But Haley? She seems to have a fully realized perception of balance and priorities, alternately getting the most out of work and play, and still keep in touch with those who are close to her as well as making strangers feel comfortable around her.

When you love your work, it is play.
