RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - Tusk - 05-11-2013

We can all agree Haley has come on the scene at a time the music industry is in the midst of a paradigm shift on how to survive and prosper in the digital download age.

As often happens in a time of 'chaos' in any system, there is a period of redistribution. The powerful lose some power, the 'have nots', become the 'have more than they dids'.
A new, wild wild west frontier on how to maximize your market, all the while trying desperately to hold on to the product of your creativity.

Through this short two year saga with Haley, I think we have been witness to two sides in this paradigm equation:

Interscope, Monolythic, bloated with artists and beaurocracy. Something of this size is generally unwieldy, moves slowly so therefore not easily adaptable. This means they would be a difficult fit for talented artists who are not easily categorized or templated.

Ole. From what I've seen of them, they have a 'newness', a freshness to their approach. In Haley's case, I get a sense of energy, that they understand that what Helps Haley, helps them. Unlike their unwieldy counterparts, Interscope, they appear to be more progressive, forward thinking.

It feels like more of the power/control has shifted towards the artist.

Haley and Ole have more of a 'partner' relationship. Interscope just felt like an indentured servitude, and maybe why Haley was able to so seemlessly recover from being dropped. She already saw the opportunities that lay ahead of her.

We fell in love with the voice, little did we know what the artist/forward thinker had in store for us Big Grin

(^^^^^^ yes, Im feeling a tad hyperbolic, today. I get that way, sometimes, when it comes to anticipating/contemplating what's in store for Haley Blush )

I always take you seriously Mr. Hyperbolic (had to look that word up in the dictionary)

I feel as good about Haley's future as I ever have. The music industry is ever changing and it feels like Haley is right where she should be. Everyone who works with her, from writers to producers and beyond, loves her and readily recognizes her great talent. It is only a matter of time before something terrific happens. Smile

RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective - ISCAT4HALEY - 05-11-2013

I found this article discussing the changing role of the music label and publisher in the digital age. I don’t know if it has been posted before. It backs what Tusk and Swansteel are saying.

http://www.lommen.com/pdf/Bob-Donnelly-Digital-Age-Shifts.aspx

“As the music industry continues to experience the traumas and triumphs of moving into the digital age, the future of music publishing is seen as more robust than that of record labels.”

“Another reason I believe that the future is brighter for publishing companies is that most artists regard their publisher as a friendly member of their team. I don’t know many artists who would say that about their record labels. For the past few decades, record companies have been perceived as always trying to find ways to limit the artist’s share of income, while expanding their own share. As a result, many artists seem to be rooting for labels to fail, reasoning that whatever replaces the current business paradigm can’t possibly treat artists any worse than the current model. To a certain extent this is true.”

The music publisher is moving to be the primary supporter for the artist. Haley’s song writing prowess and her unique and gifted vocals are the perfect complement. It appears the best decision Haley made was to sign with ole and the future does look very bright.

Maybe Haley’s first Grammy will be for Song of the Year as a songwriter and not performer.

^^^^
LOL and here I thought I was just waxing hyperbolic, a free form 'mental riff', if you will, and you find an article that says practically what I said down to publisher/artist partnership and a paradigm move away from the way bloated record companies do business.

Nice to see that some of my thoughts have a basis in this corner of reality as opposed to the usual dribble I express from behind my Haley 'tinted' glasses Cool

Thnx for the find and the validation Big Grin

That article is from 2007 but it is still very enlightening.

Quote:In today’s songwriter agreements, you’re going to find that music publishers are more likely to help finance and further the career of writers. For example, a publisher may agree to commit a budget to help the writer travel to work with co-writers or to get into a studio and make demo recordings. This often takes the form of an advance against
writer royalties.

I agree with you Swan and what everyone has been posting here recently. Haley sure seems like she has made some wise business decisions. Signing with Ole, cowriting almost all the songs on her album, attending Ole's writing camps where she is meeting other songwriters and producers. She is setting herself up for the future IMO. Even if she isn't a big music star, she will hopefully have a successful career in the music industry.

Haley does have a gift for song writing with catchy lyrics. And everyone who meets her loves her. Who can resist that smile and those long curly locks? Smile

The future is big and bright!!! HeartHeart
