When Haley was giving advice to Idol hopefuls in Chicago she mentioned choosing a song originally performed by someone of the other sex to avoid comparisons and facilitate making it your own. But in picking her own covers Haley chose to take on Gayle McCormick, Cass Elliot, and Grace Slick. Er, and Nancy Sinatra.

While I added the advice part, my post originally focused on taking on some "songs from very powerful women" as this interviewer put it.

In 2010 Steve Winwood had a Can't Find My Way Home cover contest. First prize was a Fender Stratocaster guitar signed by Steve. I remember looking at a bunch of them and there are a few posted on HF from way from back when.

I've seen it a lot and find it aggravating. If anything Grace sounds like Haley. And we'll have to wait to see if she becomes as talented of a singer.

The only similarity I hear is the textured voice, otherwise Grace doesn't have Haley's timing, rhythm or subtlety of control. This is the first time I've listened to her, tho I've seen the comparisons be made, but first impression, the way she sings feels tied in, in timing w/ the 'plinkety plink' of her ukulele.
A better comparison might be putting her up against Haley at the same age (Grace is 13), when Haley was still 'raw' and learning what she can do w/ her talent.
I'm one of those who has never been that impressed by 'child acts', Michael Jackson being an exception. While she will get better w/ her talents, it's possible, the transition from her act today into more mature performances, how she'll mold her career as an adult, could be her biggest challenge. Not many child/teen acts have been able to overcome that transition

I agree, I think there are some tonal similarities, and I can see where someone who only heard "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" and didn't realize the extent that Haley can do with her voice.

Grace has a rasp or froggy quality in her voice that probably reminds people of Haley. The similarities don't go far.

Grace does have a beautiful tone, and I can hear where people who are unfamiliar with either singer might think they are the same. (Similar to Sia and Rihanna. Sia's the far superior singer, but sometimes in a similar sounding song they can sound similar.)
She just doesn't have the vocal control Haley has.
