There might be some songs Haley is partial to that they don't like from a marketing perspective. For instance, "Better," which Anders Grahn had a hand in, might be more marketable than "My Cake." I don't think they would steer her towards being autotuned. I was thinking more along the lines of subject matter and structure. Much of Listen Up! being the blueprint -- songs about relationships that make for easily accessible background music. RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! I think I should have said overproduced rather than autotuned. Perhaps her tweet today had to do with her EP. Quote:haleyreinhart Feeling happy, motivated, & free... Much of Listen Up! being the blueprint -- songs about relationships that make for easily accessible background music. Maybe it's semantics or me misunderstanding you. When I think "background music", I think passive distribution, sort of subliminal pop and happy, stuff you hear at the mall behind ambient sounds of business... In Irvin's interview, she says about her upcoming work, it's going to be "raw, gritty, and epic" which describes anything but background music. First thing that comes to mind when I think those words is her 'never been sung live' song from LU, "Liar" I think "Undone"'s sustained popularity and placement in the "Step Up Revolution" movie did not go unnoticed by Ole. Listen Up, IMO, has more than one song that you could easily see used to set a mood for a movie, "Liar", "Oh My" and "Spiderweb" come to mind ![]() All three songs fill the "raw, gritty and epic" quotient I see an emphasis into the possibility of movie soundtracks as far as "placement" in addition to their SOP. Haley is so versatile, Ole will be like the proverbial "kid in the candy store" ![]() RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - john - 12-04-2014 Has Ole' done this kind of deal before? I'm wondering if there are precedents to the deal Haley now had with Ole' that might give us an idea of how they will handle her EP? With the music business in flux perhaps they will do some innovative things to support the release. It seems that the support they give it will be a critical determinant of the exposure the EP or a single by Haley gets. Regardless of whether this is a direction that Ole' wants to go or if it is a rather unique arrangement with Haley, they will want it to go well. Obviously they value Haley as singer and/or songwriter with high upside and they want to keep her around. But a successful or at least well done release has lots of implications for their business. When I read Haley's tweet it seems to me that it probably concerns the EP. Her words suggest she has been given creative freedom and has experienced solid support for her preferences as to the musical stylings she will pursue. The "time is of the essence" hashtag is intriguing. Assuming this tweet is about the EP (and it might not be), she now has a timeline that apparently wasn't there when she was interviewed a few weeks ago. It would be nice if Ole' found a juicy placement for one of the songs to be on the EP and hence the time pressures. Several of the comments posted by Tusk from students in Irvin's class relating to the interview with Haley indicate they didn't know of her or maybe were dimly aware. But they are all potential listeners. RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP! - Tom22 - 12-08-2014 I really enjoy "Listen Up" I think it was a very very good album That being said, I'd call all of the songs on the album "highly produced" ... that doesn't mean over produced. For me even though while Liar or Spiderweb might have a higher "rawness quotient" than some other rather polished songs it still strikes me as a fairly contained 3 minute pop song. I guess if I think Raw I'm thinking rock and wailing guitar ... harry's guitar on "sipperweb' and (Slipping my mind) was rockish but hardly wailing in raw way. .... I think raw and I think "Paradise City" .. I think Epic and I think "Alone" . But she's not type of big note focused singer when she's at her best. In comments with mayfield after "raw, gritty, and epic" she expands with "I'd like to incorporate more strings and horns and make it a full and organic production" The Second part seems a bit in contrast to the raw gritty part.... so I thought about the two together. Also, in terms of content or message she had mentioned right before hoping to include songs that were about "global warming" and also " ways people can make positive change" although that could be the interview setting sort of response overplay. I guess you could call the Michael Jackson , cover she did on Idol ... "Earth Song" fits both the rawness Epic and the strings the subject. .... without any of the hard rock sort of things I think of emphasized. To me her voice isn't the super best kind of raw but I still loved it. She mentioned in her interview the sinus infection on Idol. Still ... to break through she's gotta do what her voice is far better than other's at. I really really liked her voice and the to me "epicness" of her Human Experience singing (even if it didn't make the guy's album) I don't think many of you liked it much though? While he's electronic to me the sound was mimicing something not to far from what could be strings (I think he does have synthetic strings) and horns replacing both the electronic licks and much of the keyboard melodic accompaniment. As far as what would sell A lot has changed since listen up came out. While there have been ditzy hits like "all about that bass" and standard pop hits like Taylor Swifts songs ... those are very poppy pop and I think she implied that she'd be going a different way than that. Since there have been a few very different types of music that defied definition. The two big hits below really were far from the pop model at the time LU came out The fact there is a hunger for them suggests to me that this sort of alternative feel could be a good type of feel for Haley to do commercially and I think her voice would work well for lyrics she wrote that fit the style. To me the Human Experience sound isn't too far detached from the hits below and I like Haley's voice as she sings above more than Lorde and Sia To fit the "horns and strings" the backup singers parts could easily be substitued with more horns and strings without a meaninful difference in over all mood. Llordes Royals And Sia's Chandiler actually has strings ...but again also has dose's of electronic To me those two songs are sort of "Epic" and "Organic" at the same time. Anyway.... long as usual.. I'm enjoying speculating like the rest of you RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal!
