YouTube Ads - Mr. Bill - 06-26-2012
So this morning as I was playing around on YouTube, I noticed that there were banner ads in the right column and on the screen for Haley's album. I had seen these occasionally, but they came up on everything I played today (Janelle Monae, Barack Obama singing "Call Me Maybe," you name it).
Not sure if this is universal, but it appears to be a huge push. The ads announce the CD and say it features the single "Free."
Given that this coincides with Free beginning to lose spins, I'm getting concerned that they are going "all in" with this first single. To me, that's a mistake. Every time I play songs from this CD for friends, they have the same comments. "Oh My!" is crazy catchy. "Now That You're Here" is great and really interesting. "Undone" is a can't miss smash hit.
It's not that I don't like "Free." I do like it. I love it. I just think that it's not a surprise that it didn't become a smash hit. Because it's not a smash hit. In this market, a song needs to have a stronger hook. Released after a few can't miss tunes, I think it might climb the charts the way Kelly Clarkson's new single, "Dark Side," has climbed. "Dark Side" won't be a smash, either. It's not as strong a single.
Anyway, done ranting. I just want to believe that they won't pack it up if/when Free doesn't break through. Because I don't think it will.

Relax, everything will be alright. Another push in advertising is a good thing.
