Bad power outage indicates "Life, The Universe and Everything" are doomed! - Tusk - 07-04-2012 (07-04-2012, 08:19 AM)My Alter Ego Wrote: Haleylvr4evr, this is one of the sad consequences of a prolonged power outage (and, of course, not something that would covered by home insurance). It is unfortunate. Please let us know if there is someway that we can help. Not to mention all the migrating animals migrating at the wrong times and dieing because of it (the gradually increasing temperature and water levels of the oceans, among other things, mess with their sense of seasons). The 'glacial' (pardon the pun) speed of the ice melt makes it easy to not notice, but over the last few decades, the effects are becoming more apparent to those who are willing to see. People mistake the longer, cold winters, as proof there is no 'global warming'...'global warming' is a misnomer of sorts because it also describes extreme temperatures the other way (cooling). An example is the desert. Hot right? But the nights are extremely cold. It's about the extremes both ways that the temperatures are reaching. Also note the tornadoes and hurricanes seem to be increasing....they are affected/created by interactions of cooling and warming temperatures as well, which again lead back to the extreme temperatures of 'global warming' There is also, the eroding of the atmosphere that protect us from the suns heat and radiation from space. The result is more heat gets through, but can't escape because the pollutants in the upper atmosphere prevent it. We cause this with our pollutants, but it also occurs naturally, by fires and other geological reasons, we just accelerate it with our 'contribution.' I tend to think this is the natural course of things in the life of a planet, cooling periods, warming periods. Unfortunately for humans, a 'period' can last centuries, or Milena, in a lifetime of a planet. We just accelerate it with the pollutants we produce. In my 'forced contemplation' of life and our part in existence (seriously, those catholic nuns in England did a number on me ![]() ![]() ......So I'm not fully convinced that humans are the reason for 'global warming' or if it's just not 'Mother Nature' or Gaia, 'adjusting' itself (to our overpopulation? When I was young, there were 5.5 billion people on the Earth, now over 7 billion.) Which brings up another indicator that 'Mother Nature' is at work/adjusting, the declining birthrate in some countries...a reaction to the relative crowding on the planet...longer life expectancy? Remember, in the Earth's lifetime, humans have only been around for a tiny fraction, much less even than the dinosaurs...and where are they now? shheeeshh...I can really get going.... ![]() RE: Bad power outage - midnightblues - 07-04-2012 The dinosaurs are being refined into the to makeing of gasoline. ![]() RE: Bad power outage - Tusk - 07-04-2012 (07-04-2012, 02:45 PM)midnightblues Wrote: The dinosaurs are being refined to make gasoline.Which gets converted into pollutants that further exacerbates 'global warming'....ahh the circle of life LOL ![]() RE: Bad power outage - My Alter Ego - 07-04-2012 (07-04-2012, 02:35 PM)Tusk Wrote: Not to mention all the migrating animals migrating at the wrong times and dieing because of it (the gradually increasing temperature and water levels of the oceans, among other things, mess with their sense of seasons). I'm not sure that we're not veering into that territory that Miguel stated at the outset "no politics," although this is NOT about politics, but it is political. But until censured by Miguel, Tusk I think you're on the right track. The effects of humanity may not be the only reason that the changes we're experiencing are taking place, but only people have the cognitive skills to learn and do something about it. The question is, will we really do that? RE: Bad power outage - cherelann - 07-04-2012 There is series I watched on netfllix called " How the Universe Works.' After watching the entire episodes, I think global warming is the least of our problems. Our extinction as a species is inevitable so why sweat the small stuff.. Our immediate survival depends on human beings learning to live in cooperation & sharing the resources that are available. Every sentient being on this planet matters so I think our most immediate problems is realizing that we have to get along. If our demise happens in the near future it will be because of our inflated egos... WE are all prisoners of our own devices and the human race will be extinct I don't know about in the next 10 years unless we start a war with China or some other third world country RE: Bad power outage - Tusk - 07-04-2012 I wouldn't qualify it as political as much as highlighting events that might affect humanity, and it's 'slow to be aware' attitude, regardless of its political affiliation. And regarding people's 'cognitive' skills. That may be true on an individual level, but not as a species. We have the capacity for sublime thought, but in the end, as a species, we will always react according to our baser instincts...always. It would take something close to a cataclysm before we have the 'group think' to do something about it, but probably, by then, it'll be too late. My guess is that our only hope will be to outgrow our 'birthplace' and find habitation elsewhere. The only way we can do that is to take the next quantum leap in evolution. Our soft, fleshy bodies will have to develop into something that can withstand the rigors of space travel, not to mention the intellectual capacity to handle the distortions of chronological, linear time, that would be involved in space travel in 'light years'. The hold up is, our ability to change our environment has held up our natural evolutionary path. We control one of the primary influences in evolution. Our environment. We can now live in practically any environment on Earth and stay, basically the same. So, we've technically slowed, if not stalled our physical evolution. On the other hand, our ability to control our environment may well prove handy when we will need to figure out how to terraform a planet so we can live on it. (That's what it'll take to colonize Mars) So human 'evolution' has taken another path. I think we are at the very beginning of transitioning into entirely different beings through our accelerating understanding of technology. We can actually make organic 'machines' and 'tools' the size of tiny microorganisms, capable of entering the blood stream now. We are on the brink of creating computers that have incredible processing ability. Not at the same rate as our brain, but we are very close to mapping out neuron nets that might eventually lead to machines with simple thought mechanisms, which might lead to self awareness. In a way, the transition has begun with artificial organs and limbs in many. We can map our brains well enough to convert the electrical impulses in our brains to initiate movements in artificial hands and legs..... If we ever achieve that, then it's not that big a step to transfer our human thoughts through electric impulses into the network matrixes. And if that is possible, then long distance travel through the rigors of space and time to find a new home, becomes possible..... RE: Bad power outage - cherelann - 07-04-2012 We only think this is our birthplace. We have been telling stories for eons and we have come to believe that they are true. The ability to exist in a parallel universe could be just as easy as typing this sentence. Our biggest dilemma is overcoming the idea that this existence is the ultimate reality. Our biggest dilemma is overcoming the idea that this existence is the ultimate reality.I've always believed things exist beyond our senses to detect them, doesn't mean they don't exist. Quantum Theory and multi-verses on the other hand? Many of those theories stretch their classification of "science" as I understand the word. Get's to the point where you're basing your hypothesis on other hypothesis. Hypothesis, by definition is not fact. But then again, how sure are we of what is fact given our limited sensing abilities. Slightly related: Who else thought it was amusing that the "God Particle" (supposedly they've come reeeeeeeally close to 'finding' it) was originally named the "Goddamn Particle" because the person who theorized about it was annoyed that it was so elusive to find, he later shortened it to the "God Particle". All this time, I thought it was some kind of pseudo religous joke by scientists against creationists ![]() RE: Bad power outage - cherelann - 07-04-2012 It is my understanding that if you break down a particle to its finite existence you find nothing. This could be the greatest joke of all... |
