That's a Great article about auto-tune
It is a long one with a number of videos to watch embedded in it.
There is one pretty far towards the end with the African American Actor who was on Star Trek Deep space nine (or new gen or something) with the blind sight giving sunglasses on.
He hosts lots of science shows lately. I have a feeling that he had some hard science degree before he went into acting but either way , he's always enthused and entertaining.
He sings this song (cutting from his kitchen to the shower, to his car) as terribly as I sing in each of those three. He misses notes entirely (like wrong key) but goes into a studio with the inventor of auto tune and he and an assistant work it out to make him sound ok.
The whole article is interesting.. that example with the actor is funny and perhaps builds walter-mitty like dreams in people like me who doesn't have too great of an ear, especially hearing myself while singing.

“I’ll massage a note every once in a while, and often I won’t even tell the artist,” says Eric Drew Feldman, a San Francisco-based musician and producer who’s worked with The Polyphonic Spree and Frank Black.
But between those two extremes, you have the synthetic middle, where Auto-Tune is used to correct nearly every note, as one integral brick in a thick wall of digitally processed sound. From Justin Bieber to One Direction, from The Weeknd to Chris Brown, most pop music produced today has a slick, synth-y tone that’s partly a result of pitch correction.
I wonder if the lack of autotune will hurt Haley when she's shopping her demos. i.e., she won't sound current.

The comments were interesting. Some people were defensive. I can understand a songwriter who plays guitar using auto-tune in order to hear their songs in the best light. But I think anyone who performs on stage using auto-tune is cheating.

LeVar Burton went to parochial schools until he was 13. He spent four years at seminary before enrolling at USC to study acting. He was a sophomore when he was tapped for the lead role in the television mini-series Roots.
He's a reader though: "I grew up in a house where reading was like breathing. I just want to make sure there’s a choice available for those for whom educational television has value."
