...His current tour is running ahead of the premiere of a new animated show he's been working on with Netflix.

F is for Family, which will premiere later this year, focuses on an era before political correctness, he said.

"It all stems from just telling childhood stories on the page throughout my career," he said. "For the first 10 or 12 years of my career my stories killed, but then a new generation of kids came along and I started to get groans and 'Awwwws.' Then I realized this generation wore helmets when they rode bicycles and had play dates."

Burr said the process for the show started after he met with actor Vince Vaughn's production company, Wild West Television. Once the project was greenlit, Burr started interviewing potential writers.

"We asked them about their childhood," he said. "If they mentioned road trip stuff we said, 'See ya!' but if they said their dad had a half-deflated basketball they would throw at their head then we'd hire them."

With shows like Bojack Horseman and Archer already playing to an adult demographic in search of animated television, Burr said they needed a different approach with F is For Family.

"I love Bojack and I love Archer, but I would be really dumb if I tried to do a version of those shows," he said.

"People would just say 'Oh this show is trying to be this show so I might as well just watch the original.' I wouldn't say we're like any of those."

"I do stand-up and I have a cartoon, so that's basically all that's going on," Burr says with a laugh.

The "cartoon" he's referring to a six-part animated series called F Is for Family for Netflix, the media giant that's made the critically acclaimed shows House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and BoJack Horseman. Burr wrote and stars in the series as a 1970s dad who's "amalgamation of everybody's dad that writes on the show."

"The show takes place in 1973," Burr says, "so what's cool is that I have the catchphrases and stories of about seven or eight different people's fathers from the'70s."

The series is being produced by Vince Vaughn's Wild West Productions, which met with Burr when he had the idea of developing some of his childhood stories into short cartoons for his own website. The meetings eventually developed into a feature-length series they later sold to the streaming TV service.

"It's just something that sort of naturally progressed," Burr says. "I was always telling childhood stories on stage and I'm a big fan of animation. So I thought what if I animated them? I was just going to do five-minute vignettes on my website, and I just happened to have a general meeting with Wild West and they loved the idea. Then we got in business with [writer] Mike Price from The Simpsons and four-and-a-half years later, we've got a show coming out."

Right now, the episodes are being edited for their big release. Burr says he's been working so hard on putting them together that he hasn't had a lot of time to pontificate on what's going on in his life or much of anything outside of a recording booth or a writer's room.
