She probably works for Gaumont, and they're paid by Netflix -- over time. Since Netflix streams programs on demand, the payment schedule reflects that demand.

October 2013:
Quote:In its third-quarter earnings announcement Monday, the streaming service announced a significant shift in its accounting practices regarding original programming that will see it accelerate spending on series like “House of Cards.”

“Now we have more specific viewing data for original content which shows more viewing in the early months of a show’s debut, so we are accelerating the amortization of such content commensurately,” wrote Reed Hastings in his letter to investors. “We’ll continue to monitor the viewing patterns and adjust the amortization schedule as appropriate.”

...While networks typically pay studios the bulk of the license fee for a series over its first year on the air because of advertising revenues, Netflix adheres to “straight-line” accounting for its original programming expenses, prorating dollars over the life of the license fee. That doesn’t change the total cost, but the scheduling of the spending changes dramatically.

Pushing spending up earlier than expected could put additional pressure on Netflix to grow internationally in order to generate the revenues that will allow it to afford original programming.

... The investor letter also indicated Netflix will double its original programming spend in 2014; its 2013 spend has been estimated at $150 million, according to analyst reports.

Yesterday...
Quote:In its continuing bid to take on TV networks, Netflix is busy preparing a slew of original programming.

...this week, the company announced it hopes to have up to 20 original series running alongside its other shows and movies.

...Mr Sarandos said the idea was to launch an ‘original season of content every two and a half weeks’ to get into a ‘regular drumbeat with consumer expectation.’

He continued that this doesn’t necessarily mean a new show for everybody, but rather new shows for different ‘segments of the viewership every couple of weeks.’

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2870352/Netflix-plans-launch-20-original-series-five-years-deal-blow-traditional-TV-networks.html#ixzz3Li3HARGV

Some numbers related to Netflix:

Quote:What set Netflix apart (in the early days) was that it had far more—and far better—content than anyone else. It was able to build up a sizable catalogue of movies cheaply, because the streaming market was still small and Hollywood was happy to get the extra revenue. For instance, Netflix managed to license hundreds of movies from the Starz pay channel for a mere twenty-five million dollars a year.

So what changed? Netflix became a victim of its own success. Once content providers saw how popular streaming was becoming, they jacked up the price of their content. Netflix’s success also attracted new competitors to the market (like Amazon), and encouraged existing competitors (like HBO) to invest more in streaming. “The calculus here is simple,” Ulin told me. “There’s lots more competition for viewers. That means it’s harder to get content. And the content you do get costs more.” In the past few years, Netflix has lost thousands of movies as licensing deals expired, and this year it will pay at least three billion dollars for content (much of it on children’s programming and television shows).

As recently as 2011, Reed Hastings, Netflix’s C.E.O., told investors, “We’re better off letting other people take creative risks,” rather than investing in original shows and movies. But the rising cost of content and the added competition meant that this approach would no longer fly. Thus “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” and the Sandler deal. “The carrot for any pay-TV service is really original content,” Ulin said. That’s the one thing you can guarantee people won’t be able to find anywhere else. Of course, everyone is investing in original content, so Netflix just has to do what others are doing and hope that it can do it better.

RE: Haley Doing Voice Over work? versatility is the game - Tusk - 12-12-2014

I might have mentioned I was a big Comic Book fan, love the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that's been slaying the box office (Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, Ironman, Thor etc)....

So I've been kind of following Netflix strategy of expanding their roster of producing original programming, specifically in the Marvel Universe...

Marvel creating four superhero shows exclusively for Netflix, premiering in 2015

Quote:Marvel is creating four live-action superhero series and an Avengers-style special event that will all air exclusively on Netflix, beginning in 2015. The first of the TV series will focus on Daredevil, while the following series will star Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. At least 13 episodes of each series will be produced, and — like all good Marvel series — they'll eventually come together for a special event. For Netflix, that event will be a mini-series called The Defenders, though there's no word on just how long it'll run.

...The deal is a huge one for both Marvel and Netflix. It's Marvel's biggest venture yet into television series, and it's one of Netflix's biggest commitments as well — one that's certain to draw quite a few eyes. As big as it is, it's actually the second major deal between the two companies: a deal made late last year will make Netflix the only place to watch Marvel's movies immediately after they leave theaters starting in 2016. With both Marvel and Netflix moving quite aggressively to create new series lately, the partnership is quite fitting. Both companies have also been quite successful in those efforts

...It's been extremely successful this year thanks to resurrecting Arrested Development and premiering the Emmys-hit House of Cards, and it's now beginning to expand that focus to exclusive comedy specials and documentaries. While Netflix hasn't made it completely clear what'll be coming up next year, deals like this will help it to maintain a wide lead in front of Amazon, which has also been stepping into the original content game. Unlike Netflix, Amazon has been struggling to do that — its pilots received a tepid response, and its first shows aren't even premiering until later this month.

...Of course, Netflix's target is much bigger than Amazon Studios. The streaming service is eyeing HBO, and while we don't know yet how high the production level will be on its new Marvel series, Netflix has shown that it's willing to put up what's necessary to make a hit series when it thinks it has something good.

Anyone else get the sense that this proactive strategy into new markets sounds just a little bit like what we've read about Ole's plans? The possibility of getting in on the ground floor in an aggressive company strategy? Maybe what attracted Haley to target Netflix as another company she wants to throw her hat in with? Big GrinCool

Although interested, it wasn't enough for me to really consider getting Netflix.... Haley's deal pretty much means I'll get it for at least a couple months WinkCool

Been plugging this since SMYM, this "seven degrees of separation" with Marvel, NetFlix and Haley, may some day make this come true:

Another connection in this scenario....Josh Whedon is not only the Super HOT mind behind the Avengers movies, he also was the creator of..... (drum roll) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cool

Coincidence? Fate? WinkBig Grin

I hope your family likes the other things that Netflix has to offer since "F is for Family" won't be ready for many many months of animation work.

Wouldn't it be great if "F is For Family" gets the next 2016 Golden Globe for Netflix?:

http://www.newsledge.com/content-king-netflix-amazon-shoulder-golden-globes-12418
Kevin Spacey finally broke through with his top actor (drama) win for House of Cards. he had been winless in his previous seven nominations, and made sure to make light of the award drought.

Following the show, the season three teaser for House of Cards. Yeah, I sense another nomination at the very least.

Original content is proving to be a worthwhile bet in the digital streaming base. It’s remarkable the transformation Netflix has undergone. What used to be a DVD rental service has turned into an entertainment powerhouse. More content is on the way for 2015, and Netflix is promising a near constant churn in its content portfolio.

Amazon is the biggest surprise from last night. Before the company started offering original content, it felt like an also-ran of Netflix. You have it because of Amazon prime, plus it has a catalog just different enough to be worth it.

Now, it leaps to being on-par with Netflix. It has the awards, and the content slate. Later this month, it debuts a full-slate of content. If you love binge watching, your winter has just been filled.
