I think I may have watched too many seasons. I was doing a hobby project going through hundreds of past performances while trying to learn a few things about web programming and that may have added to the boredom factor.
FWIW after watching hundreds of past performances Haley's stand out even more. Really a huge number of other "great" contestants caterwalled and diddled around notes with gratioutous little things that don't even qualify as "licks" that their perfomances are really unlistenable.. no real musician or star used the cloying things you heard in the first 8 seasons of the show (yes there were exceptions .. usually the winners stayed away from such stuff at least).
Stupid runs or melisma isn't this year's problem.
The kids seem to have personality too compared to last year, although I'm not sure Idol is doing their best to present them well to us.
I think the band has been great this year and I was very harsh on them the first 6 live epsiodes last year (and their improvment last year never got to this years standards)
The song choices aren't too tired.. plenty of newer ones mixed in and few of the older songs are overdone.
So, I'm not sure why I wouldn't be enjoying this year other than, maybe I'm just tired of the whole story .
I want to watch and feel the excitement that I did in prior years but it's just not happening and I'm not sure it's really their fault.

I felt Idol went out their way to try and get out of the show's box and bring in a some more offbeat singers this year. But those singers (e.g. Joey) generally replace the usual undistinguished fodder that is gone by mid season. This can serve the Idol producers by spicing up the early shows. Yet in the end I think the last one standing will be Clark Beckham, who fits the AI mold perfectly. As little as I pay attention to AI, I hear a death rattle coming from that show.

Honestly, this seasons cast just doesn't have great singers.
I don't know why the show doesn't understand this.
Season 1: Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Grey carried that season. They were fantastic vocalists.
Season 2: Kimberly, Clay, and Ruben...Kim and Clay were great vocalists, Ruben never missed a note..mostly because he picked easy songs but he could at least fake being a great vocalist.
Season 3: Diana Degarmo, Fantasia Barrino, Latoya London, Jennifer Hudson..all great vocalists..
Season 4: Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Vonzell Solomon..all great vocalists
Season 5: Daughtry, Elliot Yamin, Katherine McPhee..all great vocalists..
Season 6: Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle..great vocalists
Season 7: David Archuletta, Carly Smithson, David Cook...
Season 8: Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta
Season 9: Siobhan Magnus....
Season 10: Pia, Haley, Thia (SO UNDERRATED)..then we have some good to great voices in Lauren, Scotty, Casey..
Season 11: Hollie, Jessica, Joshua, DeAndre, Elise, Erika..
Season 12: Candice Glover, Kree Harrison
Season 13:......
Season 14:.....
At about Season 8, the show stopped caring about great voices, and started caring about "the artist"..which translated into white guy with a guitar genre...this person beat significantly more talented singers for long seasons, until the show rigged it in season 12.
That was the first problem. It's not a surprise that Season 10 and Season 11 gave a bit of a rebirth of popularity (after Season 9's disappointment) to the show...because of the casts.
And the new producers seem to think "well, might as well grab artists then, if that's what people want." But it's not what people want..it's what a certain percentage want..the rest have moved on to the show with the better singers.
