An interesting thing about this "case study" is that it is all about the music. All about Haley.

Quote:The tale pulls at the heartstrings and is well-acted, but what really takes this almost two-minute commercial out of Chicago’s Energy BBDO to a higher level of emotional engagement is the music—Haley Reinhart’s rendition of the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is achingly beautiful.

That's a lot. If Haley's recording wasn't "a work for hire" (probably is), she could be earning a chunk of change.

2008:

Quote:"So many bands are trying to sell songs for commercials that many musicians are willing to do a little free work," says Al Wyatt, group creative director at Chicago ad agency Energy BBDO. "That doesn't seem fair, I know."

Mr. Wyatt, whose agency has created sonic branding campaigns for Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. (including the "Fabulous" Orbit gum commercials), still attends studio sessions in person. "That's the fun part of the job, the least stressful part of making the spot," he says, "though probably not for the musicians because they're getting screwed on time and money."

Hopefully she gets a decent piece of the royalties from the song. CHFIL gets about 100K streams per day on Spotify, which means they probably payout about $10K+ per month.

Quote:Ahead of their long-awaited IPO, Spotify is currently embroiled in controversy. While the service has the highest number of paid subscriptions, artists often complain about low payouts. According to Information is Beautiful, the Swedish streamer pays out $0.0038 per stream to unsigned artists. That means for an artist to earn minimum wage, they would need 380,000 plays on the platform. Signed artists need 340,000 plays at a per-stream rate of $0.0044.

Other services would also generate some payouts and they continue to sell some downloads of the song.

I meant iSpot.tv not Spotify. Today the number is 23,255. Close to 50 airings per day in the past three days.

And on Spotify CHFIL has been averaging over 132K streams per day for the past few weeks.

Surely she is also getting listens on other services

Spotify is the global market leader in terms of paid subscribers—it has more than 60 million, and 140 million active users.
Apple Music (AAPL, -2.37%) is the industry’s number two player with about 28 million paid users
Amazon Music Unlimited, in third place, has about 16 million paid users.

So...CHFIL is continuing to slowly make it's way to Platinum status

Paid subscriptions have been rising on services like Spotify - which means bigger payouts to artists.

Quote:Paid on-demand subscription revenue on its own was $1.7 billion, up 61 percent from the same period in 2016 and itself representing 43 percent of the total value of the U.S. music industry, dwarfing digital download and physical revenue combined.

That's huge.

I saw this report the other day. Thought it was interesting.

Quote:How Amazon's Echo Is Making Major Labels Rethink Their Tunes

Recently, Sony Music Entertainment assembled a six-person squad to crack what is shaping up to be one of the biggest challenges and opportunities for the music industry in decades. The task: getting voice-activated speakers to play certain tunes when living-room listeners call out anything from the name of their favorite band, to more nebulous requests that Amazon has fielded recently from its Echo users, such as "dog music," "drinking music," "pop music for yoga" or "Bruce."

...label executives say the voice-activated speaker explosion is radically changing consumption behavior. Fans are listening to music in their homes again with speakers as opposed to using headphones or earbuds, while older listeners are firing up streaming services without having to fumble for their reading glasses to search their phones.

...And voice-activated speakers in cars will make it easier to use on-demand music services on the road, potentially revving up further subscriptions.

...To cope, labels have been rearranging their marketing and tech staffs while improving metadata, the invisible information embedded in digital tracks containing details like artist, song title and genre. Because they're not typing or texting, users can be imprecise in requesting songs, artists or fragments of barely remembered lyrics, and labels are grappling with how they can exploit these half-baked commands.

I find this interesting. When I purchased domains long ago, I purchased ones that were short and what I considered brandable. But the real money was to be made in generic domains like cellphones.com because people would just type that into their search bar.

So if Haley wanted her latest album to be discovered in this manner she wouldn't name it "What's That Sound?" but "Songs from the '60s." One could do the same with song titles.

Anectdote -- Before I leave for work, I often say to my Echo: "Traffic Report," and it will respond with the shortest estimated time to get from home to work and the route. But the last couple of months it sometimes responds with "Traffic were an English rock band, formed in..."
