Haley, what have you given us?? The record is completely BEYOND my highest expectations. As someone who grew up in the late 60's and early 70's, I can definitively say that it captures the vibe, but with a modern twist. This is a true 'singers' album thru and thru, and I cannot image a set of songs that showcases her vocal prowess (and musicality) in stronger terms. Everything we love about her voice and the way she can sing is captured in this record. 'What's That Sound?' is now Haley's resume to the (musical) world. The production is truly amazing.
Call me crazy (and a risk taker), but I purposely didn't buy the Target Exclusive online, but wanted the experience of seeing it for the first time on the store shelf, buying a copy (or 2) , and popping it into my car stereo. It was a fun experience for me, except that I had 2 business calls this morning before I could quickly drive to my nearest Target. It was an awesome experience seeing her CD next to Fergie's!
Light My Fire.... oh man. So different than I expected, but also exactly what I expected, if that makes sense. NO ONE puts a new spin on a song like Hales. All I can really say about it isPlease, please sing it on tour!!!
I was hoping to get that same feeling today also, JMT. But alas, it's not in stock at ANY Target anywhere near me according to the website. (Nothing within 100 miles!) And where it IS stocked there are only 2 copies max. WTF??? I planned on buying several so I guess ordering it online is the way to go..and it's cheaper.
I'm getting my signed copy through Pledgemusic (and the download) but wanted the bonus tracks. And can't wait to see our names in the liner notes. Not sure when that whole package will be physically shipped though.

Yeah, I wonder what the benefit to Haley and Concord is from the Target deal. Giving up two recorded songs is a lot, so what do they get in return? It's not like Target is doing some splashy promotion. Perhaps Target puts out some upfront cash for the exclusive, and doesn't promote further unless it is a hit album. I dislike the whole concept of these deluxe versions.

As much anticipated as I was for Light My Fire, TBH it doesn't feel a 'fit' w/ the rest of the album to me. I like that Haley has completely left what we know to be the Doors interpretation to make it singularly hers, I just need to listen to it a few more times to adjust, listen to it on it's own merits as opposed to the expectation that Haley would do her 'best Jim Morrison' on the track...
"Back in the Day" when LP's ruled the roost, an LP's order of play was a serious consideration, often the second song was the single (see Free on LU) or consideration as to what songs made side A and what songs fit the second chapter, Side B, the best.
I have to imagine track order and general 'fit' as a cohesive group was considered as to what did or didn't make the album.... after first listening, I felt LMF did not fit what I've heard that made the primary album. It is the same, thematically, just felt....separate.
(I remember way back when, when there was rumour of an LP in the works, around the time of the 2nd private party....I asked Harry about it, he said what was holding things up was that they weren't too sure the songs they were considering were a good 'fit' for the album....of course the LP never came to fruition so we may never know which songs were being considered...some wondered if they included some of the 'leaked songs'
)We first heard of LMF when Haley hinted to 'trying' to get it on as a bonus track on WTS in a FB video.... I think it was just that... it didn't make WTS, but Haley wanted to add it on as a 'bonus' for fans.. perhaps Target gave her that opportunity, to be able to hear songs that weren't going to make the album... a 'bonus'
As I've said, there are songs like Oh Darlin and Time of the Season that hit my fancy right away, and there are others that I have to listen to a few more times to absorb....the fun of discovery and new music

As to LMF, I personally think it fits within the general sonic landscape, if that is a term, of the album. Parts of the song (the beginning) are more 'jazzy' than the rest of the tunes on the record, but that is fine with me. After the first minute, it's closer to the original, and Haley's vocals at the defining moments of the song are awesome. I consider it somewhat similar to Somewhere in Between (which definitely could be a James Bond movie intro or a spaghetti western theme) in the terms of divergence from the other songs. While some of the other songs were iconic of the late 60's (and she keeps them closer to the originals), LMF is considered one of the most influential songs of that age. Personally, I think Haley knew that she needed to do something different from the original. That's the one song she really couldn't play straight up.
I think you are right, Tusk, that it's probably too different from the other songs to make the final cut. I'm certainly very happy with it, and excited that we got it. When I say 'hi' to Haley at the VIP session at her tour stop in San Francisco I will certainly be expressing to her my hope that she sings it!

I would not hold out hope for them posting the bonus tracks. Usually with these target exclusives, Target literally holds the exclusive rights and it is the only place you can get the tracks from.
Ellie Goulding released a deluxe edition of her album 2 years ago and the 2 exclusive tracks have still remained under safeguard by the label, and every version that has been posted online has had copyright claims filed against it and have been removed within hours. The deal is pretty strict b/c if the songs were available online, no one would go to target in order to get the 2 bonus tracks.
