Hundreds of homes damaged by fire in Austin, TX area - Miguel - 09-04-2011
I've never seen anything like this in the Central Texas area. Everything is so dry and it was a windy day. Fires popped up in multiple places. Makes one suspicious that foul play might be involved.

Images from the Bastrop area where 450 homes are said to have burned to the ground and they still have 0% containment:

When I lived in california we had what they call. a fire seasion.I was when the Santa Ana winds would blow from the northern deserts. and would last from Sept. to Oct. Wrecking havoic all across southern Calif. Sometimes Going all the way to the Pacific Ocean. But from looking at the pics. I didnt think fires like this could happen in Texas. Its a sad sight to see

I've lived in Texas for decades. This is the first year I recall fires on such a scale. This latest outbreak was made all the worse by the high winds from that tropical storm.
Check out this video posted today by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department:

Below is a video of planes scooping water out of Lake Travis to use in fighting the fires. The drought has taken it's toll on the lake -- normally all that white shoreline is covered with water.

Fire like this is a sad and scary thing. I'm sorry for those who have lost their homes to this orange demon.
In response to your earlier remark, Miguel, in dry, windy conditions all it would take is a carelessly tossed cigarette that wasn't fully extinguished.

We live a few miles from a wildfire that burned late today in San Antonio. I knew something was wrong when I looked out a bedroom window and saw what looked like a light snow flurry. It was ash from that fire, blowing our direction.
I went outside and noticed the cars had a film of ash on them, like you see in some places after a volcano erupts, but not nearly as thick.
Texas is one big tender. Sure could use some rain. Lots of it.
