Advice for Haley from Michael Conrad - Miguel - 02-03-2012
On Nightline tonight, they had a brief segment on singers needing vocal chord surgery. Seems it's more common than it used to be.
What's the culprit? The dynamics of the business have changed and performers are now more dependent upon live shows to generate income than they used to be. That means more shows and fewer days to rest their voice between shows.
One singer also noted that when the crowd is feeding off of you and you're feeding off of them, you're sometimes inclined to push your voice more than you should.

While those are both realistic points, they combine with yet another problem that isn't mentioned. Few pop singers have much (if any) real vocal training, and, thus, aren't using proper breath support techniques. That means the burden (and strain) will be completely on the vocal chords.
(Thanks for the "blast from the past" clip from Hill Street Blues!)
