The Music Industry and Realty Television. Disconnected or Connected? - Miguel - 02-09-2012
Within the genre of reality television, music shows seem to be among the most popular. We have American Idol, The Voice, X-Factor and others. What they have in common is an emphasis on finding raw talent and highlighting the voices of the performers. But in pop music today, the performers' voices often seem a secondary consideration. Can the popularity of these shows be partly explained by a desire for good old-fashioned music?

Miguel, you pose an interesting question, one that I don't feel I can actually respond to, in the vein that you are asking. (In truth, I don't have television reception, so don't watch any of these shows. I just follow online, but don't see the complete shows. Also, since my primary music interests are classical and jazz, which is about as "good, old fashioned music" as one can get, my concept of a good performance is likely quite different from what I suspect you are thinking of when using that phrase.)
I would like to comment, though, that The X Factor seemed to be all about the spectacle and not much about the music or musician. In that respect, perhaps The Sing Off is closer to real, honest to God "old fashioned" music, since it's acapella. Again, haven't seen it (and, in this case haven't seen any online clips either), but from what I've reading, those groups have been GOOD.)
Anyway, again, the question intrigues me and I'm looking forward to the "thought full" (yes, I did that purposefully) responses that it should generate.
