RE: AMERICAN IDOL - Season ELEVEN
To be honest, as much as I didn't want to see another cute guy win for the 5th time in a row, Phillip is far from the worst contestant this season. He has a distinctive voice and a fairly unique style of singing. I wasn't rooting for him to win, but he was definitely in my Top 4. Obviously, his appearance played a tremendous part in him winning, to the point where he didn't even have to try in order to sail through to the next round. But, that doesn't mean he didn't earn his keep. He gave some great performances, especially toward the end, particularly "Volcano." His win wouldn't seem so undeserved if Haley and Crystal (the only other person I can remember from season 9) had rightfully won their respective seasons, but you obviously can't hold that against him. Maybe the problem is not entirely in how the public votes, but in how Idol selects its contestants. TPTB seem to allow the male contestants to explore their artistic identities, while reducing the females to nothing more than disembodied voices. Idol even staged the finale as a showdown between the "musical artist" and the "big ole voice." Idol is a bit old-fashioned, so they don't see how this is belittling. The opposite is true on The Voice, where oddly enough, the females singers are the most artistic (Juliet Simms, Dia Frampton, Lindsey Pavao). Idol needs to stop fawning over excessive high notes and vocal acrobatics - America sees them as nothing more than a novelty act - and start looking for compelling artists. Whenever a true female artist slips through the cracks and manages to get far in the competition, they always have the hardest time on the show (Haley Reinhart, Elise Testone, Allison Iraheta). I think Idol is still operating under the assumption that the music industry only wants generic female singers who, aside from being able to hit the notes, are malleable enough to play any part. So, it may not be America that has a problem with female singers - it may be Idol.
As for Phillip, I hope Idol doesn't force him into the mainstream. It won't work. They should let him be as indie as he wants. That way, if he flops as a mainstream artist, it's not like he was trying anyway. Phillip probably won't be an international star, nor should he try to be. Instead, he should focus on finding a niche, and doing it well. That's his best bet at a lasting career.

Heejun covers “How Deep is Your Love” – Get your hankies ready, mostly because this is one of the sweetest / saddest things that we have seen all day.
Along with Arden Cho and Gerald Ko, Heejun Han can be seen in the video below giving a pretty memorable cover of “How Deep is Your Love” by the Bee Gees in what is a tribute to the late Robin Gibb. This shows just what sort of vocal Heejun is capable of when giving the right material, and he is already planning to launch a singing career over in South Korea.
Loved Arden Cho's voice, she is very interesting.
Thx Buzz...so sweet and touching. I loved this song when I was young. They did that song right...such a subtle beautiful performance.
PS Something about korean women... Her voice is so delicate in this song...

Yes, Buzz, thank you. Like Tusk, I loved that song "back in the day." And, in their day, the BeeGees were huge, despite a good amount of criticism, some of it justifiable.
Heejun and Arden did do that song justice. It was interesting to hear Heejun break away from the melody (and create his own) a bit. If he'd shown that side of him on Idol, he might have lasted longer.
Arden has a pretty voice and is, of course, lovely to look at. Perhaps, they'll launch their singing careers in South Korea together. They might help each other quite a bit if they did.

Skylar Laine on the judges during her season...
He may be flakey at times, but reading this? Thank god Steven was there during Haley's season...
Quote:But I was lucky to have been there when (Aerosmith lead singer) Steven Tyler was a judge. The others … Jennifer Lopez always had bodyguards surrounding her. Randy Jackson really didn’t say much. But Steven was unbelievable. He is one of the most genuine, humble people I’ve ever known. He was always like, ‘Hey, how ya doing? It’s gonna be a great night.’ He was always positive, and I think he ‘got’ me. I think he understood that I didn’t want to be a cookie-cutter country singer
