RE: Guitar Solos
A few Lindsey Buckingham riffs...and the guy doesn't use a pick
Comment on the "Big Love" vid:
Quote:Don't even try to cover this song on your guitar. Your version will suck!!! Lindsey is god!

^^ Lindsey Buckingham is such an enjoyable around package of talent. Fleetwood Mac Rumours - Now that's my idea of a Big Mac!
^ As for the Sultan of Swing himself, Mr. Mark Knopfler, definitely and underrated guitarist. He truly is a guitar virtuoso.
This video of Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins may not be a good fit in such a rock-n-roll biased thread (and there are so many great rock videos with Mark Knopfler) but I love Chet Atkins too so here it is anyways

That was really beautiful, thnx. The first song makes me think of lying in a hammock on a hot, lazy summer afternoon sipping on some lemonade, and what a beautiful rendition of Lennon's "Imagine" ... it got the "hairs standing up on my arms" seal of approval.
My knowledge of music in America is limited to late '70s on because that's when my family arrived from the UK. I know even less of Country music beyond, Crystal Gayle, the Allman Brothers, and maybe the Eagles, so Chet Atkins is really not in my wheelhouse, but he blended so easily with Knopfler ....very nice
Knopfler is underrated for someone who has such an instantly recognisable style, it is so easy to listen to, almost like a ballerina on strings the graceful way he delivers his songs.
His style, to me, is reminiscent of the '60's 'surfer music' guitar bands like The Shadows
Loved Knopfler's work on "Sultan's of Swing"
Another band which hit it big for one album with that same sound I loved was Fastball
Not sure if "Surfer Music" guitar is the proper way to describe that style, but I love it.

RE: Guitar Solos
I love so many of the above and heard many of them live (although I heard Dicky betts with the Allaman brothers and he deserves a link of his own)
Here is one slightly different but really one of my favorites... more about how he grows a solo and the note play with the rythym and kinds surpises in syncopation. Believe it or not (or ala Walkin on heave ~ "they call me crazy, but.... " ) I hear some of these sorts of turns from haley ...
(I'm giving a eric clapton cover as an example to make it a bit more approachable - some people got strong biases thinking hippy not a blue-grass fusion)
don't give up on it right away.. his solo's grow upon what he sets up in the bars ahead.. doesn't reach till near its conclusion at 6:30..about 3 minutes from its beginning.

RE: Guitar Solos
^^ Love the post T-Man I kind of thought that posting Chester here might be considered to be a little out of order (I was ½ expecting the gavel). And I totally agree... it really is a nice clip. I can't watch it much though because it makes me sad (I was born12/8/80, the day John Lennon Died, and I'm a total sap when listening to any of his tender compositions). But I do have a "makes me happy" album by Chet Atkins and Les Paul titled "Chester & Lester". It's in the top 10 of my all-time personal favorite records, so of course I'd highly recommend it to any guitar enthusiast.
And wow! "The Shadows", thanks for that one, I thought I had heard everything from the 60s thru the 80s (I inherited about three thousand vinyl records of classic rock from my dad). I had always thought of Dire Straits as a new and original sound, but apparently "The Shadows" could also be called "The Foreshadows".
FM: If you want to experience some "ripping and gripping the slide guitar" just slam down a 6er, crank your box a notch above max, and then click play:

Oh HELL YES TOM! JERRY GARCIA (sorry for yelling, but he deserves all caps)! Why? DOH, "Cherry Garcia" is my favorite Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor!
