Mariah Carey As 'American Idol' Judge: 'Real Advice, Real Criticism'

'She knows what it's all about. She's got the golden voice,' former 'Idol' contestant Haley Reinhart tells MTV News.

It's official: Mariah Carey will be a judge on the next season of "American Idol." The singer will reportedly bank a $17 million payday to sit on the show's famed judging panel, and according to one-time "Idol" contestant Haley Reinhart, the chart-topping, butterfly-loving pop superstar is worth every penny.

"I think that that's fantastic, Mariah Carey joining the panel," season 10 singer Reinhart told MTV News about the show's latest casting shakeup. "She knows what it's all about. She's got the golden voice. I think that out of a lot of different people, she would be the diva to stand there and be able to give people real advice, real criticism."

To put that in perspective, the other day I found myself considering a lotto scratch-off game and the riches it promised. The top prize was $2.4M. It paid out $10K a month for 20 years.

Mariah will earn nearly 41X that amount in a matter of months...for critiquing the work of aspiring artists. People in all sorts of professions who love their craft/field do that every day for free.

Mariah Carey pulled Nicki Minaj aside yesterday and convinced her ... feuding would not be good for the show, and they both needed to stop the antics they pulled during Sunday's auditions.

"American Idol" sources tell TMZ ... Mariah and others were ticked off Sunday that Nicki arrived 45 minutes late ... and that set the tone for the whole day. Although Nigel Lythgoe is saying everything was hunky dory Sunday, we know it wasn't. Mariah talked over Nicki, criticizing her critiques, and Nicki fired right back.
But on Monday, Mariah buttonholed Nicki and the 2 agreed ... a feud wouldn't be good for the show, so they buried the hatchet and walked down the hall smiling, hand-in-hand.

But here's the thing. We're thinking a feud is exactly what "A.I." needs.
