RE: Haley's stage movements
I'm not sure I have the right words either, but I think I understand and sort of agree what the author was saying
- its not a matter of not doing some of the things but just pushing them a bit harder -
I think Haley has got to make it feel more like she is Hosting Us(the Audience) rather that she is a guest. Even if she is a guest, on someone else’s she’s been given full authority to “take over the ship” when handed that mic.
We want an entertainer to be a bit larger than life … and have a strong stage presence. That doesn’t mean they need to be aloof , or “too cool” … artists can have some “swag” to them even when acting humble. Ryan Seacrest and Billy Crystal take a stage and don’t put on heirs of being “big shots” Vegas style, but still leave us no doubt that they are in control of things and reassure us that she show will keep rolling on.
The country-girl singers have a way of being gracious and saying humble things but still acknowledging that the Audience thinks they are hot shit …. They can blush or say “I can’t believe you’re clapping so much for little ole me” but in doing so are confirming they’re the star.
Haley says all the right things but somehow there are looks and times between them that do feel she is there only as long as we want her. (of course we could leave and she should treat us as if she’s trying to keep us there….thats the “host” not the guest part)
Really though, it is a matter of practice..
…. And I think that is exactly what the writer implied…and the writer expressed confidence that Haley would figure out a way to make it work .
Its just a matter of taking it up a few notches and finding a way for the method to feel confortable personally when pushed that hard.
Imitation and experimentation are important too.
I think she’s been using the “rock star” front-front man thing “lets make some noise and rock it out” which might be what she feels but it doesn’t work if it sounds like “Rock it out, (please)” she trys but there is just that “please” in her voice by nature. So, I don’t know exactly the words others use, but there are more approaches than the Steven Tyler or Debrah Harry approach which is what she’s trying a bit but I don’t think really works for her 100% .
Jimmy Buffet used a story teller angle….I can’t remember but I think Steve Miller might have use that too. Dolly Parton will do the both “little ole me” thing and the “let me tell you about this” stage presence thing.
Haley has been doing trying mini backround stories and does a bit more story telling on talk shows so she’s trying….but it could go a lot farther in sounding friendly while maintaining her authority of control when we’ve given her that baton.
A star can be friendly and gracious and self effacting and yet still make sure she's glistening in that spot light she keeps on her.
Its all practice, and borrowing from here and there,….and she’s been in drama. A bit more Shakespearian stage presence maybe?
.... I'm glad im not the one that needs to do it !

RE: Haley's stage movements
I don't think anyone is crticizing where she is relative to her experience or questioning that she'll find her own way to get better at it.
Any discussion about someones abilities is going to talk about what they can improve on as well as stregnths and brainstorm a bit. Without sharing of reasoning its just a list of opinions. I wouldn't say anything about it outside a thread sort of bringing it up as a subject for discussion.
Haley's doing great and will keep doing better... thats all that needs to be said unless someone wants to talk about details of what could have ellicited the comment by the reporter.

Look at those photos for example. Incredible, classic, epic poses. I watched the Metric lead singer, and she is really good, but you couldn't find a picture in her whole set like those.
You're definitely on there... she's got a great camera presence and a real personal warmth to her on talk shows etc.
