The span between December 24 and January 2 is a dead time in the music industry, a lull during which most industry players and musicians sign off their e-mail and go home to their families. It’s an acceptable time to take off both because of the holidays and because there are so few releases.

...“Most of the physical retailers focus on larger pop artists and Christmas-related releases in December,” Sandshaw explains.

...“The holidays seem to be a time for most majors to re-release successful albums or put out holiday box sets. On a retail level, the stores are way more apt to carry the best sellers of the year to cater to the mainstream record-buying public.”

..Trohman, who has seen his share of album releases thanks to his time in Fall Out Boy, says that in his past experiences with releasing album, it’s somewhat taboo to release a record in December. “It used to be that December was the worst time of the year to release anything non-Christmas related,” he says. “Usually there's little money left [for labels] in the fourth quarter of the year to put into anything but Christmas releases. Major labels used to forbid bands and artists from releasing anything post-November.

A single release right after the holidays for Haley may have an extra boost just because of the "iTunes gift card" factor. Young people, and gift card holders of all ages, will be ready to buy something on those card balances to show that they have something for Christmas.

Wonder how big an effect this has become in the last 10 years?

I dunno. But I imagine the effect would be magnified for an American Idol contestant because many families view the show together (or discuss it afterwards) and it would seem like a small thing to drop a $1.29 to have another shared experience while they're all together for the holidays. If the extended family has gathered it could possibly create new fans and additional buzz.

Producer and Artist – The Evolution: “I was always an artist first and I hadn’t really produced anyone before Plant Life. One of the first people I hooked up with was Cee-Lo, a mutual friend played him the first Plant Life record and he was really diggin’ it. He wanted to hook up and maybe make some music. We formed a side group together call the Heart Attack and we just really clicked. Then like John Legend, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, and just all these people started hearin’ all this stuff I did with Cee-Lo and started reachin’ out. I just worked with R.Kelly and it’s very different from the stuff that he’s done but he just had fun with it and we just went in the studio and had a blast. Getting the Grammy: “That was awesome for multiple reasons. Jennifer is such a sweetheart and is obviously one of the most awesome, strongest, real voices in contemporary music and workin’ with her was so fun. The song that we did on her record was one with her and Fantasia. Actually, Missy Elliot and Jazmine Sullivan were also involved in writin’ the song so it was like a really cool kinda dream team. For me I was just happy with the way the song sounded, but I mean bein’ able to have a little Grammy plak on the wall felt kinda crazy and awesome. It was definitely kinda unexpected. That was a night of some wild chills thinkin’ like, ‘Wait, I actually got a Grammy certificate? Damn!’”

Hooking Up With Others: “I just kinda go along with the ride and I just keep workin’. Literally, I’ll be in the weirdest places like the wild studio in Vegas workin’ with Britney [Spears] around the time that she had the breakdown, or in the Bahamas on a beautiful beach workin’ with Shakira, or out in Chicago just buggin’ out or freestylin’ with R. Kelly.”

...A Movie Too: “I did an animated movie in conjunction with (my latest) album that has Cee-Lo narrating with Lupe Fiasco and Janelle Monae playin’ the two lead characters.

I think it's notable that an established producer is not shying away from mentioning he is working with an American Idol contestant. In fact, he not only mentions Haley in the same breath, he gives her first mention.

Bassett is one of the most in-demand rock writers of the moment, whose recent collaborations include songs for Saliva, Halestorm, Sevendust, 10 Years, and Skillet. Bassett co-wrote the majority of Shinedown's platinum album 'The Sounds of Madness' including the single 'Second Chance' which went number one at four formats and all five singles went to number one at active in the United States. 'Second Chance’ was also named an ASCAP Song of the Year. Dave is currently is currently co-writing Shinedown's upcoming LP.

In addition to being an accomplished rock writer, Bassett's cross-genre appeal has seen him pen songs with Josh Groban, Lisa Loeb, Orianthi and American Idol star Kris Allen.

Some bands have all the luck; some bands have all the pain. Lost Luggage has decided to call it quits, following a string of major label near-misses, and the recent defection of drummer Andy Poland. The quartet returned to Chicago last fall from a four-year tour of duty in Los Angeles, and hoped to reissue its 1991 independent release "Chateau Relaxeau" on Atlantic affiliate Mammoth Records. MCA Records also had a moment of interest in the band, but nothing materialized. "They liked the band, they liked the songs and wanted to work with us, but they wouldn't fork out the cash. They gave no reason whatsoever," says the band's singer-songwriter-guitarist David Bassett. "We were in L.A. for four years and the name was probably getting stale. It seems that if a band isn't signed in a year out there they write it off as trash."

Bassett will drop the Lost Luggage name and head out to Tinseltown with no excess baggage. His former bandmates plan to continue here in Chicago as Something For Joey.

Their videos certainly get high view counts. I'm having a hard time blending their styles in my mind to create something "urban." I'm not a big fan of the "synth" sound of LA LA LA.

Will be interesting to see how Top 40 some of the tracks on her album will be. Based on some of the writers and producers she is working with, I can see there will be a couple and I know that doesn't make some of her fan base happy but its the reality of being signed to a big label.

They're going to want to get their money's worth out of her and she has such a unique and beautiful instrument to work with, I can see her putting out a song which her older fans will hate but will sell like hotcakes to the Teens as well. Synths, booming bass and all.

If it pays the bills, gets her name out there to promote the music she really likes and furthers her career, its all good. Many bands I've listened to growing up had their "bread n butter" pop cuts (e.g. See Van Halen "Jump") yet still delivered great music for their fans as well.

Her versatility is both a blessing and a curse because she can cover about any genre of music out there and do so convincingly. The bright side of this is her voice does sound great and all of her fans can enjoy that no matter what its on top of.
