Thanks everyone, I've been lurking for a bit..but I finally decided to join. Wish it was under better circumstances though. Still, for some reason I'm pretty positive about this. Haley is just too talented to disappear.

I agree, I think in the long run this is a good thing. Interscope dropped the ball early on with Haley, and now she has a chance to sign with someone who can maximize her talent and charisma to the fullest extent. I look forward to all the great music we will hear from Haley and her future label.

In any event, Haley can perform any of the sings on LU but she (or more likely the venue at which she performs) would be on the hook for the performance fees; the same holds for anyone else who performs the song. (She would then get a share of this fee, but shared with all other copyright owners and their publishers according to their share of ownership -- %ages may not be evenly split, but such info. is typically not public).

Of course, if one of the other copyright owners (her co-songwriters) objects then there might be a kerfuffle, but that's pretty unlikely.

Everybody sure gets a piece of the pie! Sounds like it's not even worth it to be the singer. By time the record company, manager, writers, publishing co, fellow musicians, etc get their share, there's only penny's left. This is the first time I heard of performance fees.

Well, Babbs, the fellow musicians and the song writers certainly do deserve a piece of the pie. (I don't quite know how that works out when the singer is also the songwriter.) Back when I was a member of the musician's union, it was my understanding a part of the dues that I paid went towards paying those royalty fees for the songs we played. (Except for the one we played written by the band leader, but never copyrighted. We didn't have to pay for it, but then again, she didn't get anything back as a result.)
