RE: Haley in LA at SkyBar - December 11th, 2012
“The Christmas Song” has been performed by every major artist out there from all walks of music including its writer, Mel Torme’. It must be daunting for a performer to sing this song or any famous song because inevitably that singer will be compared to the previous ‘Big Name(s)” that sang it.
I find myself comparing the same songs between artists to see which one I like best. I also make comparisons to Haley. I’m hesitant for fear she won’t meet my internal hype sort of speak. This song is the perfect choice for me to make the following comparison. I have not heard every version of this song from the different artists, but I have heard it from my favorite ones.
The best rendition to me came from my all-time favorite artist, Natalie Cole. Natalie Cole touches my jazz soul as no other artist prior to Haley. I never thought I would experience another artist that would affect me to this level until Haley. So what did I do, I listened to both versions of “The Christmas Song” and you know what? Haley just confirmed what I already knew. Her version to me is better, although very close.
Haley’s choice of tone, tempo and inflection of notes is perfect. But above all she pours so much emotion into it as with all of her songs that I feel the song right with her. I also made the same comparison last year with “Baby, Its Cold Outside” where Natalie Cole duets with James Taylor and I had exactly the same sentiments.
This is probably the wrong place to post this topic, but I had to express myself. She just has to do a Christmas album.
