I think because it's generally believed that you have the best chance of winning AI if you come from the south or areas nearby because of the voting block that comes from there. Lee Dewyze, from Illinois, was the exception to the rule. The majority of winners come from southern states.
Kelly Clarkson-Burleson, Texas
Ruben Studdard-Birmingham, Alabama
Fantasia Barrino-High Point, North Carolina
Carrie Underwood-Checotah, Oklahoma
Taylor Hicks-Birmingham, Alabama
Jordin Sparks-Glendale, Arizona
David Cook-Blue Springs, Missouri
Kris Allen-Conway, Arkansas
Lee DeWyze-Mount Prospect, Illinois
Scotty McCreery-Garner, North Carolina
Phillip Phillips-Leesburg, Georgia

The theory is that she wouldn't garner enough of a fan base that will get her the necessary votes.

Like I said, who Idol wanted to win, I think was Janelle. They even gave her a second chance last week. She's just not ready.
I'm with you, mercfan3, on Candice. Vocally, Candice is "on fire" this year! And while I didn't care for the songs that Kree sang this week and last week ("Up to the Mountain" does absolutely nothing for me, even when performed as perfectly and flawlessly as Crystal did a few years back), I can appreciate that voice of hers and what she does with it. She's a "wow" too.
What's happened with Janell is a surprise to me. I'm reasonably certain that she pretty much "stole the show" in her Vegas group number last year and I and a few others on the TVLine comments section were fairly stunned when she was cut at the end of the Vegas rounds. Now I see that the judges knew what they were doing (did I just say that????) when they did so.
So, back to Candice -- you're right. She was nothing short of flawless last night! I hope she has a long run. She doesn't need to win -- she just needs to get to 2nd or 3rd finish and she could carve out a nice little career like Melinda Doolittle seems to have done.

^^(Sigh) Surprise, surprise.
VFTW is less caring than AI producers seem to be, and that's saying something. Charlie's about to, if he hasn't already, lose it. What happened to him last night didn't have to happen, and it's just a shame.
Fortunately Ryan was on top of his game, recognized the situation, and was empathetic.

RE: American Idol 2013
Didn't even make it as far watching the guys as I did the girls.
Honestly, I didn't think Charlie's performance was THAT bad. I thought Zoanette's was much worse. What was disconcerting to me was Charlie's 'ensemblay' (as Mariah might put it ).... I'm not sure if his plan was to go the 'androgeny' route ala David Bowie but at times he looked like an old woman in that get up
in this THR article about the guys, Charlie sounded like he knew what to expect and talked with more confidence about it than what showed after last night's performance. (He had also auditioned last year)

Quote:“Last season was the first I watched all the way through. After I watched a full season and had a feel for how the show was run, I decided to come back this year with a vengeance....I’m much more self-aware this year and have a much greater sense of who I am and what kind of artist I want to be
Incidently, I came across this old interview of S10's gals after Motown Week....made me ache for the 'likeability' and talent of that season even more... (LOL at Haley being 'the messy one' because she was too busy shopping )...especially with the 'meh'ness of both guys and gals of this season
