A long ways from gigging in LA (I've seen hints that she still intends to visit the UK)..... She's had a taste, even more motivation for bigger and better things ahead

Iain Pirie, a couple of years ago:

DK: When your artists are working on their albums, do you look for songs for them?

Pirie: Yes. Sometimes I take the lead in finding songs, and sometimes the label takes the lead. For example, with Daughtry and David Cook, I worked closely with (A&R execs) Ashley Newton and Pete Ganbarg on their projects. I recently worked very closely with Universal Nashville for Scotty's and Lauren's albums. I work closely with Carrie Underwood on her albums, including finding songs and setting up co-writing sessions. I have a good rapport with the vast majority of the "A" list songwriters. and we work together to come up with the best songs for our artists.

DK: Do you send out email song searches to these hit songwriters when your artists need songs?

Pirie: I prefer to meet in-person with songwriters as often as I can. I enjoy the personal connection of working with them. With Carrie, we made a big effort to cross-pollinate the best Los Angeles and Nashville songwriters for her. We would mix it up--there would be an L.A. writer and Nashville writer collaborating on songs with Carrie personally. Carrie has become a very strong writer in her own right.

He has an interesting history. He started out blogging about new artists from his apartment in Germany. He picked up on some artists before they were signed that later became major stars/contributors. It became a must-read site for A&R folks in the U.S. This past fall, he accepted the A&R job at Warner Brothers.

He said in 2010:

"Having one hit single is not enough. You need to deliver a body of work that showcases who you are and makes people attach to you!"

"There is definitely a strong pattern as to why certain artists work and have success. It all comes down to making people care! You accomplish that by being unique and showcasing your personality through your music, photos, videos, etc. You need to have an identity and stand for something!"

Some of his tweets:

"Raise your hand if you think vocals that are autotuned to death are cool. Ok, now with your other hand punch yourself in the face please."

"Dear pop music, I don't want to set the roof on fire or put my hands up, but thanks for asking."

"Take care of the music, and the music will take care of you."

He also tweeted a photo of his whiteboard. I guess people know of it. The third thought stood out to me:

In looking back at the year (almost) since "Listen Up" was released, one thing that seems clear to me is that Haley is interested in exploring and trying new things. Since LU did not blow up and make her a big star (although she deserved to be), I think it also may have grounded her and now (I hope) she realizes that to have a long career in music, she needs to follow the very wise advise of Mr. Wilhelm.

She needs to write and make great music on her terms, and build on her unique and powerful charisma and charm to stay connected with her fans. I am still hopeful that she will put together a band and tour behind a second CD as that will continue to build and strengthen her fanbase.

As we have seen, it may take years and several CDs until that "breakout" CD or song (See Lumineers, Fun, Mumford and Sons...all they way back to Journey, Peter Frampton...you get the point). But it is great that she is getting to experience working with this diverse group of people thanks to the terrific support of Ole. And as someone said, maybe her first Grammy will be as a songwriter, not a singer......

But whatever happens, we Haliens are along with the ride.....
